For our last few days in Kauai last month we rented a condo in Poipu. Didn't like the one assigned to us, so worked with the helpful manager to choose another condo. We visited all three, and chose what turned out to be the lesser of three evils...

Got our stuff and moved to the new condo: opened the front door and the first thing I saw was 2 very large roach corpses in the hallway. EEK!! I swear they weren't there the first time we looked at the condo, just a couple of hours earlier. I hate the things. Called housekeeping and a nice cheery guy came over with spray. He picked the dead ones up by their antennae and threw them outide, not phased one bit. Didn't see any more, but I felt like I had to be very vigilant: put the empty luggage up on shelves, and didn't walk round barefoot in the dark!!

On Kaua'i they say "cock-A-roach, and they are the biggest, but the slowest I have ever seen! While we were there an announcer on the radio station was having a contest for the best cock-a-raoach story. "I found this cock-a-roach that was so big it....." That sort of thing. Hilarious and totally Kaua'i.

This is funny, googling the collective noun for cockroaches came up with:
an intrusion of cockroaches
or
a swarm of cockroaches

SB Travlr: These things fly and crawl up walls, so lifting things off the floor is only minimally effective!

Inspect your luggage/clothing well upon returning home, maybe spray the luggage and wash all clothing to make sure you don't bring the little buggers home, in the form of eggs (look like a creepy vitamin pill!)...And don't forget any boxes/paper you may have shipped things in to home!

I've been pretty fortunate in not having too many cockroach issues. There were some in the buildings at Mana Lea Gardens on Maui but my friend and I didn't have them in our rooms but we were prepared just in case..we had single man tents that we set up on our beds and zipped in for the night safe and sound. Others of our group had then in their rooms and they were all over the kitchen walls at night if you turned on the lights..oh yuk...I know they won't hurt me but the are just too gross. My brother and sister-in-law rented a condo on the BI many years ago and my SIL went out to the kitchen to get some water, it was night and she didn't turn a light on and a cockroach ran right up her leg under her nightgown..the "devil" Anyway, there were outa that place and at a hotel the very next morning!!!!

crefloors: They don't hurt you, like take a bite, normally, but they carry diseases and many people are allergic to the droppings, causing asthma exaccerbations, etc.

YIKES, belle and crefloors!!

I knew when I was putting the suitcase on the shelf that it was not a real remedy, but it did make me feel better. The good thing about those Kauai cockAroaches is that you would defintely notice if one was in your luggage! We're home now and unpacked, bags back in the attic. We live in CT so those winter temps will soon take care of any, um, remnants (though I did inspect the bags first, LOL).

Crefloors, your SIL must have had a coronary -- running up her leg? OMG!! Before the trip, I was a bit creeped out by posts from folks who found roaches in their rental cars, and was wary at first. But once we got to Hawaii and it was SOO beautiful, those fears really left (well, until the Poipu incident!)

Spray the outside of all your luggage BEFORE you go. Really wet it down. This will prevent the roaches, if they are around, to be attracted to your luggage. And if by any wild chance they managed to get into the luggage, they would have collected enough residual spray to have killed them before they could lay eggs and multiply.

aileen679: Now THAT's a good idea!

A funny you may enjoy:
My neighbor agreed to start cleaning my house once a week a couple years ago. She, and her entire family are pranksters, alot of fun. Well, I get home and my cream colored mattelasse bed coverlet and pillows (I have alot of pillows) were all arranged picture perfectly, and on top of the nearest pillow was a huge cockroach!

Well, to that point, I had never HAD cockroaches in this new home, as we have a terminex contract, so you can imagine my astonishment! I carefully lifted the pillow, took it outside to shake it off, and then, what I suspected, became apparent...it was a fake!

But it LOOKED like the real thing to me...UGH!

SO when she complained about a tree frog jumping on her arm while cleaning around the front door recently, I had NO sympathy at all,LOL!
