Clamming in Seaside
Wow have we had some great sunny days at the beach in Seaside!! Razor clam season is in full swing. Everyone is out in waders with their clam guns and buckets catching their limit right now. We are going out this afternoon to try our luck!
Dinner last night at the Silver Salmon in Grille in Astoria OREGON was excellent. Award-winning clam chowder to start, alder planked salmon with dungeness crab, garlic mashed potatoes and steamed green beans for the entree. A nice glass of the house Pinot Gris and creme brulee for dessert. Another perfect day on the beautiful northern Oregon coast!! The day was topped off with a movie Mona Lisa Smile at the Gateway here in Astoria. ***kim***

uuhhhh, If you lived in the Pacific NW you would understand! Sunny days on the Oregon coast are local news, and sunny days in winter on the Oregon coast are national news! I'm thrilled for kimamom.
I'll never forget our first trip to the coast in July. It was 95 degrees when we left Portland, and we wore our shorts and teeshirts, with swimsuits underneath. As we drove over the coast range, the clouds rolled in and we heard the weather report, "And it's 55 degrees on the Oregon coast with winds of 20 mph." We bought sweat shirts and still didn't last long!
That said, we love the Oregon coast. But those sunny days - Wow!

Orcas - go to the Oregon coast in the spring and fall (especialy fall) and you'll have many more sunny days. I really don't know why I tell people that - they'll just take up my hotel room!
Summer really is the worst time at the coast, winter is actually fun to dash between storms but out of 3 days you are bound to have one sunny day.

Kim,
Of course you've got sun, the jet stream was reversed and now we've got rain down here
Just a little tho and I like it this time of year. I'm glad it's been so nice there--did you get any clams and what did you do with them? Oregon Salmon...oh, I can almost taste it. Happy holidays to you and I enjoyed your report.

Kimamom, glad you are having a great trip. Ignore uuhhh's sniping.
By the way, your report was incomplete! What kind of salmon? You know that people in the NW are as snobby about salmon as Californians are about wine--so what was it? Silver, chinook, kokanee, Alaskan, Copper River? ;-)

No, we don't need a license to go clamming here, cigalechanta.
Kim probably had silver or chinook, BTilke. We had more salmon up the Columbia this year than any in recent memory. When the first one got to Bonneville, what do you think it said.. dam(n)!
Oh, and I think the point of uhhh's post is that Kim lives in Astoria.
Merry Christmas all!!

Hi everyone! Unfortunately, I don't live in Astoria but we do have a vacation home there and are remodeling a beach cottage in Seaside, OR This was a work trip actually so to get down to the beach for an hour or so was quite a treat for my daughter and I. We were very busy picking out things for the house as hubby and my two sons and a friend continued to work on our remodel there.
Now, for the salmon question......it actually doesn't say on the menu but I'm assuming all of the salmon there is silver since it is called The Silver Salmon Grille. I was supposed to meet the owner (at his request) but they were not in the night we were there. I had written a small review in the Oregon Coast magazine a few weeks ago raving about this place and they published it, so he wanted to meet me!! (Maybe a complimentary glass of wine or dessert is in my near future)
We had our clam gun in the car but did not have time to go down and clam. Time just ran away from us. Only in OR for three days this trip. I did find razor clams on the SSG menu and hope to try the recipe if we ever get any!! They are served lightly couted in panko bread crumbs, butter grilled and served with a remoulade sauce. Mmmmm!!! Merry Christmas to all you Oregon and beach lovers on this board!!! ***kim***
