I think the menora in Central Park (5th AVe and 59th St) is up or will be up shortly, so you should be able to see it if you head up towards Central Park. It is lit for the days of Chanukah but up most of December.
From there you could walk up to the Central Park Zoo (66th St) or a shorter walk to Woolman Rink for Ice Skating.
Also there is a wonderful holiday fair at Bryant Park, (42nd and 6th) which the kids will love also and the skating rink there is really nice as well.
If you do the Staten Island Ferry, Ground Zero is not far, and the older kids may understand 9/11.
