Choosing San Francisco Hotel

I am planning a trip December 27-31 to Northern California (from SoCal) with my two daughters (17 & 21) and a friend of my 17 yr old. We will stay one night in Cambria and three nights in SF.

I decided against Priceline for SF hotels due to strike issues and risk of getting two beds. I then booked Villa Florence at a great rate but after reading further reviews decided a double double room at 200 sq ft was very small for 4 women. I have spent some time looking at bigger rooms/suites and would like some feedback on them based on any personal experience. Although I was looking at Union Square because my youngest likes to shop, I am open to other areas as you will see. Rates are without tax.

Beresford Arms - Union Sq Queen Queen Studio Ste wet bar Continental breakfast
$20 parking $129/night AAA rate
(read about location but seems like a good value)

Monticello Inn - Union SQ - King King room 400 sq ft Parking $29 $5 per room cont breakfast $145/night
(noise issues might be a problem?)

Columbus Motor Inn - Free Parking Two room family suite One King One Queen (couldn't get three bed suite) $135/night AAA rate
(good reviews)

Argonaut - Fisherman's Wharf - Will match Expedia rate of $127/night for Queen Queen room. Hotel parking $32 other parking nearby $15-30.
(although this is rated #2 on tripadvisor for SF hotels, gets mixed reviews)

Also looked at Grosvenors Suites - they look good and can get a view but was more expensive at $159/night $20 parking.

During my trips to SF I have stayed at the Tuscan Inn at Fisherman's Wharf and by Union Square at the Renaissance Parc 55 so am familiar with both areas. The homeless in Union Square were a little disconcerting but not bothersome. Just want daughters to feel safe if they should go out by themselves in the evening. My older daughter has been to SF recently so she knows area pretty well-has no preferences on where we stay.

Thanks for all your help. I am excited to go to SF and show my DD (17) the sights.

Just talked to Beresford Arms. Teenagers at this hotel are considered adults so charge is now $169/night AAA rate. Doesn't sound as good but will still consider if there is a good reason. Would also appreciate feedback on Grosvenors Suites since $159 looks a little better. Thanks.

clarkgriwold - Thanks. Any other recommendations? If someone has stayed at Monticello lately I would appreciate their opinion.

My beau and I just stayed at the Kensington Park for 2 nights in late October.-it is less than 1/2 block from Union Sq...we LOVED the location...hotel was charming-it is a "boutique hotel" in the Personality Hotels chain..the hotel across the street was on strike and our desk clerk suggested that we could have a "street side" room (noisy)or a back room with no view but quiet-the strikers bang drums at all hours...we opted for the no view room, but it was very nicely appointed-it had a queen and was a decent size-and really very nice overall-I would definitly stay here again and would recommend it for price/value/location/even ambiance-a charming lobby and connected to Farallon, one of the trendiest restaurants in town. Don't know if they have suites. We paid $109 per night. (a Fri. and Sat nite stay.)
By the way, the homeless problem seems to be a little under control-I had heard about it too and was a little concerned, but if you stay on the beaten bath, there is a new ordinance that the police are enforcing to keep them off the street corners (pretty much). Good Luck and have fun.

Thanks for the tip, I checked Kensington Park it only has double double rooms and am looking for a little more space. Glad you had a good time in SF.

We stayed at the Monticello Inn while in San Francisco and found our $250 a night suite very small....Noise was not a problem. They did have complimentary wine down in the lobby...Nice setup.
It's right there at the cable car turnaround. We were looking into staying at the Renaissance Parc 55 for our next trip.We went to their sports bar and loved it!

Debbie - I enjoyed my stay at the Renaissance Parc 55. I was there for a convention but had free time also. They only have rooms with two double beds but they are offering a 325 sq ft double double room with parking for $139/night. Pretty good deal. I am wondering if the hotel is giving this price because of noise from nearby hotels affected by the strike.

Don't know what suite you had at the Monticello Inn for $250. Supposedly the room I booked has two king beds and is 400 sq ft. My thought was that having two king beds, the room would have to be pretty good size. Still torn between hotels in Union Square and the Columbus Motor Inn.
