Chicago Road trip in January

My brother and I are heading to Chicago in January for a much needed 2-3 day getaway. Kind of a "guys weekend, talk about some serious stuff" weekend (i think he's planning to propose to his girlfriend). We're looking to catch a Blackhawks game, see some sights, and put back a few. We're both typical mid-20's sports-minded guys. Where are some good places to stay close to bars/brewpubs, restaurants, and in close proximity to the El (if that's the best way to get to the United Ctr?). Any advice would be great. Thanks!

The United Center is pretty far from an el-station, and it's grounds are surrounded by the highway and housing projects - pretty shady.. There are plenty of buses from the loop, and you'd probably be ok, but I'd just take a cab from where you eat. I'm sure there are restaurants that offer shuttle for $$$, this would be a good idea.

As for the hotels, what I would do is bid about $70-$80 on a hotel on Priceline.com, and use the $50 or so you'll save on cab rides.

As for brewpubs, the best one by far is goose Island. Not exactly located near the loop or UC, but a very nice place with good beer. The only good micro here in my opinion.

As for sports pubs or restaurants, there is Harry Caray's (not cheap), and I think a Fox or ESPN theme restaurant near the gold coast.

Good luck

You'll want to hang out at Rush/Division streets and in Lincoln Park. The el will get you everywhere (buy a day or 3 day pass). Check out www.metromix.com for events and activities. Agree with earlier post to hit the BlackHawks game then head out,not a lot around there. Have fun!

The el will not get you to United Center.
Rush/Division bars are passe. Lincoln Park is nice, but there's no reason to go that far on a two day trip. Stay on North Michigan Avenue, or in the loop area. Catch a cab to the United Center, and walk everywhere else.
