Chelsea NYC
Dear daughter will attend FIT in NYC in the fall. We plan a short trip probably in March to see the dorms. I'd like to stay at a place that may become a recurring stop, since I hope to visit many times in the next 4 years,....
I'm considering the Inn on 23rd as well as a couple of VRBO apartments. I've read the mixed reviews of Inn on 23rd. Most complaints are about the sheter next door. I'm curious about your experiences - at the Inn, other places, or an apartment.
Thanks in advance.

We stayed at the Inn in Oct. Yes, there is a shelter next door.A few people were on the strreet out front in the day time. Never saw anyone at night and it wasn't a problem. I would stay there again. If you do stay there, check out the Irish Rep. Theater on 22nd. We saw an excellent performance there. CJ

Hi there Austin! I stayed at the Red Roof from Jan 10-13, 2008. I paid $128 per night, plus various taxes; I booked through the Apple Core's own site, which will give you options for all 6 hotels in the group.
That weekend is probably one of the dead-est of the year in NYC, that's why we chose it! Rates in NYC vary from week to week depending on demand; it probably costs 2 or 3 times as much in December. But relatively speaking it's still a bargain.
The entire hotel is recently remodeled, all done in calm taupe and brushed nickel and earthtones (new type, not 70s). The bathroom was like an average home bathroom, definitely not cramped. Open-shelf vanity under the sink with plenty of towels (4 of everything for a 1-bed room), doubles of all the little soaps and toiletries. Shower has one of those newfangled bowed-out rods so it feels bigger (and can accommodate bigger bathers). My daughter and I had plenty of counter and shelf space for all our stuff. Good lighting choices in there, too, and an exhaust fan we couldn't even hear; but we know it worked because the steam cleared out quickly after a shower.
There were not enough electrical outlets to suit us (phone chargers, computers, etc.), and some were behind big pieces of furniture (there was a generous bureau, plus a desk). And the bedside tables had fake drawer fronts, not real ones. Those are our biggest complaints, so I guess we liked it.
Rooms ending with 01 through 04 will have views of the Empire State Building but they also are closest to the elevator and face 32nd Street, which has a 24-hour restaurant.
