The Ocean Resort, a couple of blocks off the beach at the Kapiolani Park end, is offering specials this summer.

Depending on your length of stay and the number in your party, vacation rentals are often the cheapest way to go.

in south Kona on the BI--Manago Hotel is inexpensive and just up the hill from Kealekakua Bay and Honounou Bay (Two Step) both have good snorkeling. It about 20-25 min from Kailua Kona (non rush hour). www.managohotel.com

In your other post you mentioned hostels as a possibility for you and your 5 friends. Hotels on Maui are generally more expensive than on Oahu, so Maui would be a good place to try the hostel. You should definitely consider Banana Bungalow. They are highly rated. They have free computers, wide screen communal TV, and a large hot tub. Best of all, they have daily activities and excursions to the beach & elsewhere. Here is their website: www.mauihostel.com
I've driven by it and it looks very clean. Although it is not on the beach, it's located in one of my favorite old towns (Wailuku) where you can walk to stores, coffee shops, pubs, etc.
My other suggestion for Maui would be Lahaina Shores, which is right in the action-oriented town of Lahaina.
Units have kitchens so you could save money on meals. They are having some reduced rates due to construction.
My granddaughter stayed in a hostel on Oahu that she liked a couple of years ago. I'll find out the name and post that for you later.

My family stayed at Lahaina Shores (3 different units) and I liked it alot. Great location walking distance to 'downtown' Lahaina. But it was far from what I'd consider "the cheapest". I think my folks paid around $200 for each room.
