NY Times Frugal Traveler in Hawaii

The writer did a nice trip report which may be useful to those planning a Waikiki stay.

But getting there has not been inexpensive.

That's a pretty good article. Thanks for posting.

I'm a big campaigner for "Hawaii doesn't have to be expensive" so love to see others help get that message out.

That said, I know nice & cheaper hotels -haha!

I saw that article and I forwarded it to all my friends and blog readers! Great piece.

suze - I agree with you! I've been telling many people that Hawaii can be done on a budget...and I myself have done it. Back in 2003, I went to Oahu with my boyfriend (now husband), and we didn't have much. We stayed near Fort Derussy in what is now known as the Outrigger Luana, but because of a pricing mistake, we got the room at half of regular rates (which they honored). When I saw the deal I knew we had to go to Hawaii, someplace we didn't think we could afford until later. We ate plate lunches and poke on the beach for meals. We loved it! And we splurged on diner at Alan Wong's at the end of the trip. Still my favorite restaurant in Hawaii. Yum.

I alternate vacations between Hawaii and Mexico. They come out the same price over all for me (from Seattle). In Waikiki I give more for my hotel ($125) room than an apartment in Puerto Vallarta ($65), but the flight to Hawaii is cheaper and I actually spend less money in Waikiki as far as my daily pocket money, drinking, restaurants, etc.

"One of the first surf movies ever made — shot, in 1906, by none other than a Thomas Edison camera man — takes place on Waikiki Beach, the famed beachfront neighborhood in Honolulu."

Interesting! I bet not many people know it.
