You don't mention where you're flying from.... Airtran just started servcoe to Las Vegas and their prcies are generally very low. I have now flown with them five or six times and been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the planes and the service.

Try the consolidator websites:

travelocity.com
expedia.com
orbitz.com
cheaptickets.com
and the individual airline websites.

I going to Vegas the end of August. I'm checking airfares and they're running like $160rt and up (from lax-las)!! I wonder if the fares will drop. I'll check again next week....that seems so high for basically a 30 minute plane ride. Southwest fares are $90 each way!
Anyone have suggestions when would be a good time to purchase tickets to Vegas for the weekend of 8/22? Thanks!

I would definitly not fly with AirTran ever and I'll tell you why:
Remember the ValuJet (now AirTran) crash into the Florida Everglades on May 11, 1996 killing all 110 on board? The crash was caused by the illegally loaded oxygen generators that created an intense fire in the cargo hold of the ill-fated DC-9.
Soon after the crash, ValuJet bought the also troubled discount airliner AirTran. The AirTran - ValuJet merger was an attempt to hide ValuJet's troubled past by using another airline's name in hopes of erasing the stigma associated with the very high profile ValuJet moniker.

I've posted the same reply on another forum just to remind people who are they flying with.

Air Tran is not flying Value Jet's old airplanes. Air Tran has one of the youngest, newest fleets in the industry.

I think you are unfairly chastizing Air Tran.

But the board of directors hasn't changed that much!!!
They still have their old way of thinking.

The lowest fare I found to Vegas from LA was $130 rt on United. Last week, Delta had fares for $116 rt BUT you had to change planes in Salt Lake City, Utah. It would've taken 3 hours to go to Vegas from LA....unbelieveable!
I bought my ticket yesterday because I doubt fares will drop anytime soon and I'm going the weekend after next.

The management at airtran does not have that old way of thinking. If they did, they wouldn't have the youngest fleet. The DC-9's were all of Deltas old crappy planes.

I have flown Airtran and they have been great. Every airline has had accidents blamed on management. Look at American about 5 years ago when an overworked pilot crash a plane on landing in littlerock. You could easily blame that on management.

Fly Airtran,You'll be fine.

Hi GenX

I do remember Valuejet and that plane crash that took 110 lives. Most of us that have been around awhile remember.

I also remember that Valuejet had a supposedly cost cutting practice - where they had their planes serviced by an outside jet maintenance and overhaul company. That company shortchanged their duties and did not properly train employees which allowed those cannisters to be loaded onto that plane with absolutely no markings indicating its dangerous contents.

But for your additional information

Did you know that United Airlines has recently subcontracted out its aircraft maintenance too? Does it also make you wonder about the possibility of problems with United's maintence? It does me - when they are going to these extremes to save money - this has an effect on the consumer's safety.

thats right LN. That was a maintainence messup where the laboror didn't mark a box correctly and follow procedure correctly.

What about when the Alaska plane crashed in the Pacific because the rudder wasn't properly maintained? Every airline has these foulups.

Ahhnold just in case you didn't know, AirTran is still flying the aging DC9 on their regular schedule.
All their DC9s were acquired from foreign airlines and not from Delta and the engines were acquired from Turk Hava Yollari (a Turkish airline). Their DC9 fleet is the oldest in the nation.

I'd like to retract my comments on AirTran.
I've recently flown AirTran for a business trip, and I had a great experience. If I have to fly AirTran again, I would not hesitate.
They now have one of youngest aircraft fleets in the nation, made up completely of Boeing 717s and they are expecting a delivery of brand new Boeing 737s this summer.
