bboasg, you asked this question last week and have some responses on the original post. To find your post click on your name to the right of the black fodors logo -- where it says "welcome: bboasg"
And as the original post states -- yes, Charlottesville is out of the way, but not ridiculous depending on your time frame. It is about 2 hours from C'ville to W'burg. You might look at one of the online map programs...

If you are coming down 95, you will take 64 west (to the right)(Richmond area) for about an hour - an hour and fifteen minutes. That is Charlottesville. Then you will turn around and get back on 64 east and drive for about 2 and a half hours and you will be in Williamsburg. It is not totally out of the way.
Where in NJ are you coming from? You can also take 287 west to 78 west to PA and go west to Harrisburg and then take 81 south to Charlottesville and then head east to Williamsburg. It is more scenic and longer, but never traffic. We take this route north to NJ to visit inlaws in Northern NJ.

In case you follow the route suggested by girlonthego you should know that 81 doesn't go to Charlottesville--you will have to exit I-81 at Exit #221 and go west on Route 64 East to get to Charlottesville. Then continue west on 64, through Richmond, to get to Williamsburg.

If you want perhaps a more scenic drive you can take I-66 West from Washington/Arlington until you get to Route 29 South and get to Charlottesville that way; four-lane, divided highway and a little more interesting than the I-95 to I-64 West route.
