Charlottesville is full of some really excellent non-chain restaurants (probably too many!). One of the best places to go and find something to eat is the historic "Downtown Mall" -- it's an outdoor pedestrian plaza that is full of shops and restaurants from pizza (Christian's has gourmet-type topping options) to a converted Hardware store (sandwiches and the like) to higher-end restaurants. They can walk through and choose what they are in the mood for.
Local favorites outside the "mall" are: Continental Divide; Bluebird Cafe; Mono Loco
Might want to stay away from "The Corner" as it is generally packed with students.
