Charlestown SC or Savannah

I have the opportunity for a long weekend and have time for one of these cities. I enjoy history and the ocean and hope to spend time sketching. Could anyone recommend which I one I should start with?

Thanks.

they're both great places, but I personally enjoyed Charleston just a bit more.

I also think that Charleston's waterfront is perfect for sketching.

Whatever your choice, I envy you, have a great time.

We visited both places last month and enjoyed Charleston a lot more. The squares in Savannah are very pretty but there is more to do and see in Charleston. Some of the beautiful houses would be perfect for sketching and we felt the waterfront in Charleston was nicer.

another vote for Charleston -
here is my last trip report from there - (my second)
and I can't wait for my third. Also enjoyed Savannah, but for what you want Charleston is perfect - not wave crashing ocean, but magnificent harbor and park to settle in and sketch - and the buildings, the wrought iron gates, the flower boxes alone are worth sketching -
the streets, the history - just beautiful -
plus = you'll be surrounded by art and galleries -

We loved Charleston too - wonderful plantations, being on the water, good food, and beautiful gardens.

I lived in Savannah, and loved it, but loved Charleston even more...better shopping, better restaurants. Of course they both have the ocean and history, but if you want to sketch, Savannah sure is the place hands down. The squares with their live oaks and Spanish moss dripping from the branches, statues and flowers, just beg for an artist to come sit down on one of the benches and begin sketching. If not the squares (which are beautiful) then ethereal Bonaventure Cemetery, old cemetery with live oaks, dogwood and azaleas, gorgeous elaborate tombstones and all this set on the water. Can't imagine a better city for an artist.

My son has lived in Savannah for 4 years - I love the city. My dtr has taken some incredible photos - not as much of squares but little side streets. Agree with OO - for a nice trip, I would pick Charleston; for art backdrop I would pick Savannah. Savannah also is home to Savannah College of Art and Design which has some nice little galleries and art-related shops.

Call in sick and extend weekend to 5 days and do both?
