Friends and I spent a week in the Charleston area in late September. Lots of great food choices. Our favorites in Charleston itself:

We also ate at a great place on the Isle of Palms, the Long Island Cafe. In a strip mall, but it's quite handsome inside and the food was fab.

In the fine, more traditional dining style, Magnolias and, as WeisserTee mentioned, Hank's Seafood, (if you go to Hank's have coffee and dessert at Kaminsky's, just around the corner)
Slighty less traditional, but one that we enjoyed, is SNOB.
The open kitchen at SNOB is an integral part of the dining experience. Very good food, knowledgeable staff, extensive American wine list.
Our favorite eating area of Charleston is on Morrison Dr., north of Hwy 17. We can't wait to go back to Butcher and Bee, Tatooed Moose and Edmund's Oast in the tavern and brewpub category.
It is hard to go wrong in Charleson.

In Mount Pleasant, Grace and Grit is fabulous. Just opened this year with Chef Frank Kline, formerly of Acme Lowcountry Reataurant on Isle of Palms. It is a beautiful place, and has wonderful dishes. Acme is still excellent, as well.

Hardly traditional but Xiao Bao Biscuit is wonderful according to my foodie kids--and DGS who lives in Mt. Pleasant.
These same kids (restaurant owners themselves) had very poor experience at Husk. As everyone knows, on any given night, something can happen.

We loved Husk, and enjoyed their bar next door, too.
Also really liked High Cotton, and thought the bar was great for classic cocktails.
We went to Cru Cafe for lunch and wished we had time to return for diner.
The only dud was 5 Church, which I would encourage you to avoid at all costs!

Our new favorite is 167 Raw Bar! Try the scallop po'boy! SNOB has been bought by another group and Frank Lee is no longer the chef and it is reflected in the food.
A fun night is cooking class with Bob Waggoner who was once the chef at Charleston Grille before Michele Weaver. I agree that "Fig" is okay.
Isle of Palms favorite is Obstinate Daughter and Wild Olive on John"s Island.
Trattoria Lucca is always great and we love Cru!
