Charleston or Savannah?

Wife and I can meet for a weekend at either. We like shopping, some history and good food. Not interested in driving from one to the other for a day trip. We work in different cities right now, so not all of the time would necessarily be spent outside the hotel....

I think the plane ticket to SAV is cheaper by about $100. Is Savannah $100 better than Charleston? Thanks!

It depends on who you ask.

Do a search on this forum for both cities and you'll read a lot of good info - including opinions.

I vote for Savannah.

My vote goes to Charleston. Great city, great restaurants, enough history to make anyone happy and lots of walking room.

Go to Charleston! Awesome restaurants! Awesome historical district. Many romantic inns, hotels, & B&B's. My wife and I go there often on our anniversary! Enjoy!

Charleston, and we lived in and loved Savannah! Charleston dining and shopping is far far superior to Savannah's. My husband always went to Charleston when he needed new suits/sport coats for work; I went along for my own "stuff", and wonderful antiques shopping. Lots of really good shops to browse. Plenty of excellent restaurants (Savannah has enough good ones to keep you eating happily for a weekend, but Charleston's selection is much broader.)

Both are nice romantic cities--you probably wouldn't be disappointed with either, but IMHO, Charleston has a very decided edge all around.

I agree with Charleston if you can only do one city. While I love them both, the dining, shopping, and attractions are superior in Charleston.

I live in the South and have been to all 50 states. In my opinion, Charleston evokes a lot more Southern charm than Savannah. There's more to see / much better restaurants / better shopping / and the place is simply "more memorable". Conde Nast Traveler ranks Charleston as the 4th best travel destination in the US. I wouldn't argue with that conclusion. If possible, stay at the Planters Inn. (Tremendous location / very romantic / great staff)

Choose Charleston. In October it was voted the #4 destination in America by Conde Nast Magazine. We're also planning a return trip in march - its an amazing place! Have fun.

Love them both, but Charleston, elegant, serene, beautiful, Charleston edges out Savannah. Shopping and dining and sightseeing in Charleston are incredible. You'll love it! Lots of romantic dining, too, which might interest you...
