George,

I live in Charleston and like most Charlestonians would never live anywhere else. April will be beautiful.

Must see - Middleton plantation on Hwy 61 (approx 20 miles from town), the old market, Fort Sumter, the battery, the visitors center, the Charleston museum.

Restaurants - McCrady's, Carolina's, The Penninsula Grill.

Hope you enjoy Charleston as much as we locals do.

I spent about four days in Charleston a couple of years ago. You can read my travelogue, which comes with lots of tips and photos, at www.oneeyed.homestead.com. You will love it!!

It really depends on what you like to see and do. but the whole area is filled with history . . .I really enjoyed: the Magnolia Gardens Plantation, Fort Sumpter, just walking around the area and looking at the architecture, lots of historic houses which you can tour, taking a carriage ride . . .

You might visit the AOL travel South Carolina board--LOTS of good help there too. There is a highly recommended walking tour given by Sara Ragsdale that apparently makes Charleston even more memorable. Much good eating--Slightly North of Broad is one.

We ate at Magnolia's while in Charleston. It was one of the best meals I've had. I highly suggest it.

If you can, try to schedule your trip around the annual walking tour of homes & gardens sponsored by the Garden Club of Charleston. Here's info from the convention and visitor bureau site:
"The walking tour, hosted by The Garden Club of Charleston, will include some of Charleston's finest homes and gardens in the Historic District and will also feature flowers arranged by members of The Garden Club. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased by mail, the Visitor's Center, or the Heyward-Washington House at 87 Church Street from 10 a.m to 4 p.m the day of the tour. The tour will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2002 and Saturday, April 13, 2002, from 2-5 p.m. For further information, contact Ernestine Salvo (Advance Sales) - (843) 556-4351 or Brenda Jonssen (Local Sales) - (843) 571-3455."

I have been to Charleston a number of times. I enjoyed the Hominy Grill which is just outside historic district. Also liked Pinckney's (sp!) which is in an old house in the historice district - had lunch there - not extremely fancy but nice surroundings.

Also liked the Mustard Seed in Mount Pleasant - the food was great - located in strip shopping center but worth a trip across the river
