Is Death Valley Worth "Undertaking"?

We're debating whether or not to drive through the Death Valley area from LA to Las Vegas versus going via interstate 15 (faster) in March.
Is Death Valley worth the detour?
Is the Furnace Creek Inn worth the $$ (kind of pricey for what the rooms look like on their website)?
Is Scotty's Castle worth the extra driving north??

Thanks for any opinions.

If you're into unusual natural sites, Death Valley may well be worth the visit. Unusual dryness over the millenia has made this desert area a macabre scene of desolation. It also is the lowest land in the Americas.

One thing to be sure of -- do NOT visit Death Valley in the summer unless you are REALLY prepared for hot weather. Look at the name of the place, and I hope you'll figure out why!

If you have the time it is worth a visit, if only for a day. Scotty's' Castle is worth seeing and would fit into a one day visit. In one day, two springs ago, we hiked for an hour in one of the canyons, toured Scotty's Castle, walked the dunes for a bit, visted the lowest point in the US (Badwater), did some driving around the park and had lunch at Furnace Creek. Going through DV will add about 140 miles to the trip (270 miles as opposed to 410 miles). Drive time, however, should you decide to visit will be around 9 hours instead of around 4 to 5 hours.

It is an unusual place, and I think it warrants a stop, but not if really out of your way or takes time away from more important destinations. The Furnace Creek Inn, frankly was a huge disappointment. It passes itself off as a luxury resort. The room was like a standard Holiday Inn, the food was mediocre. We stayed two nights and decided the second night to go down to the casual steakhouse in the "village", it was far better than the hotel dining room. I found Scotty's Castle interesting. A very nice and liveable house actually, but hardly what one would call a castle. It is unique for the story that goes with it, not for any grand or glorius architectural and decorating value. Don't think Biltmore House or Hearst Castle. There are some interesting short hikes and drives, but nothing that I would call spectacular.

I think Death Valley is a magical place. Have been there twice. Can't wait to go back. I've traveled extensively, and I've never seen anything like it. 3 of my favorite spots:

Dante's View (sunrise is best).
Zabrinskie (sp) Point (sunset).
Golden Canyon hike.

I've never stayed at the Inn. The Motel units at Furnace Creek Ranch are fine. I've heard the Inn is nice, as long as you aren't expecting the Four Seasons. The food in general is average at all of the restaurants. Similar to other National Parks in remote places.

I highly recommend D.V. Even for a day.

Although it is hard to tell a complete stranger what is "worth it or not", I can attest to the wonder of Death Valley. The desert needs time and patience to be appreciated. I had to develop a love of it and to love the beauty of deserts. Look far and look close you will see sights you have never seen.
I stay at the Furnace Creek Ranch, and it is a fine motel. Maybe read up on desert fauna and flora before you go and you will appreciate it more.

I agree with others above: worth a detour just for the uniqueness of the place, and Scotty's castle is nice.

DV is truly one one the great wonders of the world - an absolute must-see if you are remotely in the area. We found 2 days not enough to see it all - missed out on Scotty's Castle. Stayed at Furnace Creek and thought it reasonable priced considering it's wierd location. Don't miss DV on any account!!!
