Change vacation plans?
My wife and I were planning to spend our 25th wedding anniversary on Kauai at the end of May. Because of all the rain and flooding on Kauai, we have delayed purchasing our plane tickets or making hotel reservations. Is it realistic to think that the island will be sufficiently dried out by May 24th or so? Are all of the Hawaiian islands pretty much in the same shape with respect to rain and flooding? If we didn't go to Hawaii, do you have any suggestions on another type of romantic holiday for our 25th wedding anniversary? Thanks for your help.

My 12 yr old GD & her best friend & I are flying to Kauai on May 25th for 2 weeks. Nothing is going to stop us. The island is used to a lot of rain, it has very good drainage. It will dry out quick once the rain gets back to normal.

You know that Kauai is the wettest place on earth, right? That's what makes the island so lush and green. The previous 41 days were a freak of nature--as I said on another post, for all you know in a couple of weeks it will be bone dry. I'm looking out my window at Oahu today and it's a normal, gorgeous day.

I just got back on Sunday from a week in Kauai and 2 days in Maui. Yes, it rained, but I still came home with a noticible suntan. We were able to golf, go to the beach and see a few beautiful sunsets. I tend to think the weather is back to "normal" meaning, you'll have rain on some areas of the island and not on others, and if you do get rain...it will clear in a few hours.

Just came back from Kauai. Trip was from 3/29 thru 4/3. Almost cancelled because of the weather. We had a beautiful trip. Thursday was rain, but every other day was beautiful and sunny and warm with the rare shower. STayed on the sunny Poipu side. The roads are all opened. We had no problems at all. In fact the other islands seemed to have more problems. Would take your chances and continue with travel plans. The weather as we were leaving seemed to be getting better and better. Would take an umbrella for the occassional shower! Very glad we didn't change our trip - Kauai is beautiful.

My husband and I are going to Kauai mid May for our 5 year wedding anniversary. Does anyone have up-to-date info on the conditions there? I can't seem to find much on the net. Are the beaches open? Are things getting any better there? Thanks for any help. I've been dreaming of this trip for over 20 years and can't bear to think things won't be great!

No worries -- our beaches are mostly cleaned up, with the balance of them due to be clean by this weekend. Surfers and snorkelers are back in the water, rains have dropped back to just being occasional showers, daytime temps are near 80, overnight lows in the mid-60s, and the tradewinds are keeping everything wonderfully breezy.
You can look forward to having a _wonderful_ stay on Kaua`i!

I just got home from a two week vacation in Kauai. I was a little apprehensive to go after hearing the horror stories about the weather and beach conditions, but my wife and I trekked on, and I am glad that we did. All of the beaches that we went to were open. We mostly hung around the south shore. All of the beaches were open, but the water was a little murky. In most spots snorkeling was good, although my favorite spot (Whalers Cove) was too dirty to go into. In fact the water was just plain black. But all other spots were fine. We went on a snorkel/boat trip on Capt. Andy's, and the water was so murkey with red dirt that we weren't able to snorkel. The flip side though was that we saw 5 or six whales. Two swam under our boat, and the water was so clear that we could see them. We also saw a few of them jumping out of the water, pretty awesome.
We spent a few days on the north shore at tunnels beach. The first day provided great snorkeling, lots of fish and 2 turtles. The second day the surf was too rough to do much snorkeling so we ended up exploring the beaches and caves of the north shore.
We also spent some time diving. Some of the best diving I have done in Kauai in a long time. Tons of fish, whale songs, turtles and the occassional white tip reef shark.(harmless)
My advice, book your trip, you will have a blast.

By the way, I didn't mention this before. But the weather was absolutely great over the last two weeks. We couldn't ask for better weather. We got there on March 31st and came home last night. Every day we had a lot of sun. However it did thunderstorm/rain late at night.
