For more literary fiction:

Last night I wanted to add Linda Barry's Cruddy to my list, but forgot, so I'll add it now. Feel good it ain't. Disquieting, disturbing, fascinating, heartrending, and brilliant all rolled into one.

tuscanlifeedit, I wrote down your former list and will hit the shelves mid-week (next) to get as many as I can. THANKS. I missed quite a few of those and will now add "Cruddy".

A good one that isn't in the league of some others here, but for those of you who are Anglo and Francophiles, plus a good Isaac Newton- New Scientific Age era read, "The Alchemist's Daughter" by Katharine McMahon.

I agree with you Missypie about books like The Awakening for high school students who have no foundation for understanding the stories' emotional conflicts. A better choice would be something like Nature Noir by Jordan Fisher Smith. It's a dose of reality for those who may have starry-eyed notions of work as a park ranger. Smith's memoir chronicles the rangers' balancing act of maintaining a beautiful wilderness area in the Sierras and policing the clueless, ignorant, and downright scary people the park attracts. He also throws in interesting discussions of geology, local politics, and the devastating effects of a a personal healh issue. It's a great, quick read.

ahhh..I've enjoyed reading this thread. A good ten years ago I belonged to a monthly book club but life got in the way and I dropped out. I still enjoy reading, but pretty much reserve it for summertime because I'm off. I would like to print this list and wander through the library reading the book jackets.

I've read Night by Elie Wiesel this summer (good stuff), Say When by Elizabeth Berg (normally love her books but didn't like this one), Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picoult (usually enjoy her writing), A Wedding in December by Anita Shreve (enjoy most of hers, too), The Narrows by Michael Connelly (picked up in the airport for fast airplane reading), A Year Of Pleasures by Elizabeth Berg, and Rage by Jonathan Kellerman. I've begun reading The History of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict by Ronny Simon and will bring to Yosemite this week an old classic, To Kill a Mockingbird (haven't read since high school), and a book that interests me as a teacher and a mom, The Knowledge Deficit by E.D. Hirsch.

I have a high schooler as well, and enjoy perusing the reading list to see what I've read or even what I've heard of!

Keep the great ideas coming...

Happy Friday readers

Here's what I bought yesterday:

Poisonwood Bible

Peace like a River

Hemingway(always had a strange fascination with the family)

Oh, I bought my kids books as well, plus a nifty tropical islands 2007 calendar to keep the next winter bearable, lol.

BayouGal, I noticed your quote in the Alaska Fodor's, as well as others, cool.

Suzie~.. I guess I deserve a medal for bravery after ds took the wheel. As luck would have it, there were wind gusts of 50/50 along Turnagain arm, and rain and lots of semi trucks heading north... he's doing okay, but my ears are assaulted by his new Static X cd, which is some poor guy screaming about bad relationships or the world has not treated him well.
Then he started in about airplanes and intoxication at 30000 feet and then it went to politics and then an idea for a book that a 17 yr. old male would find funny(and a mom would definitely not)..one hour later, I requested mandatory silence and I looked for bears in the woods, but didn't spot any, despite the menacing conditions of the storm..
Also folks, I walked down the center aisle at Barnes and Noble, pausing briefly and smiling when I saw the Beach Reading stand, lol. J.

Since this is a travel site, I would recommend to anyone going to Santa Fe "109 East Palace Avenue" by Jennet Conant. Well-written story of the Los Alamos atomic beginnings from the viewpoint of Robert Oppenheimer's secretary and the interaction with the world's leading physicists.

For northern Michigan visitors, "The Nick Adams Stories" by Ernest Hemingway. For Navajo country, the wonderful Tony Hillerman.

Cerebral? Well, just great reading.

I so agree, missypie and devonmcj...I really don't understand some of these choices for high schoolers - there are so many wonderful high quality books out there that teens would find totally engaging. My 15 year old son is totally resisting and dragging his #^%& about getting these read. My impression was that these were poor choices, but I haven't read them so I appreciate the backup.

mooselywild - yes, usually the list is ALL the books, but I was unclear whether those were just summer books OR if those were the titles for the entire course.

Anyway, thanks for starting a great thread, jetset1. I will be interested in your impressions of "Peace Like a River." It is beautifully written, but I feel as if I must be the only person I have come across who didn't really care for it that much. Hmmm.
