I prefer staying the night (or weekend), but YES YES to both! You CAN take a helicopter, but if it's windy, no you don't want to do it, too scary. The latest versions of the Express (especially the Cat) are wonderful and not too stomach crunching during those later afternoon trips (the water is calmer in the morning if that's a problem for you).
If you are planning to do this over July 4th weekend, make sure you get your boat tickets far in advance. Which reminds me, I need to make that call right now!

seetheworld: Where did you end up staying in CA., and how did you like it?
calamity: A day trip over is a lot of fun, and worth it. If you are prone to seasickness, definitely take something. We rented the golf carts and toured around the island ourselves. It is beautiful.

jd: We are staying in Redondo Beach and we made a day trip to Catalina Island. We loved it! There seems to be lots of accommodation options -- everything from small hotels to B&Bs. Click on my screen name to find my recent trip report on how we spent our day on the island.

Yes it is wonderful. We were there in April. If you want to stay overnight there are a couple hotels that include your ferry ride. We left out of Newport Beach on the Catalina Flyer. Catalina Flyer also had coupons to download off their website. The ferry ride alone was great fun. We saw hundreds of dolphins. The island also has some interesting wildlife from buffalos to bald eagles.
