I'm looking at hiring a car in Boston/suburbs just for a day. Anybody have suggestions of where to get a cheap car hire for a day with unlimited mileage, insurance, etc. Just looking for a compact. Any suggestions, please advise.

I've had good experiences with Enterprise. They'll even come and pick you up, just call one of their Boston-area offices and tell them where you are, they'll hook you up with the office that's assigned to your neighborhood. Or call 800-325-8007. Modest vehicles at reasonable prices. And negotiable sometimes, if they're stuck with too many cars sitting on the lot!

Budget has good rates in Allston, Hertz now has local offices, at the hertz website click on "check nearby locations" and choose a location near you that has HLE next to it. Use rate code "Local" or "Best".

I've had good luck with Enterprise, but most locations have a mileage allowance (typically 150 mi/day) instead of unlimited.

Thrifty has consistently given us the best rates and service. Every time I try another company I'm dissappointed. You may also find specials at thrifty through www.travelzoo.com.
