Car rental in San Francisco
What car companies can you return a rental car in the Union Square area of San Francisco? We are planning to rent at the airport and go out to Healdsburg for 4 nights and then come back into the city for 2 nights. How costly is it to then get a cab back to the airport?

I will bet that the major rentals all have Union Square area return sites. Most of the national rental car chains do not have premium rates for returns in the same metro areas as the origins. Try Enterprise, Hertz, National and Avis. I will bet all four have airport and downtown locations.

Most of the major rental car companies have some kind of presence in Union Square.
Hertz: - 433 Mason
- Westin St Francis, 335 Powell
- Fairmont, 950 Mason
Avis - 675 Post
Budget - 321 Mason
Thrifty - 350 O'Farrell
Alamo - 320 O'Farrell
- 750 Bush
You may want to keep the car in SF for at least one day for driving around to some places such as the Presidio (Museum at the Legion of Honor). Otherwise, if one person returns the car at the airport, he/she can easily return to Union Square via BART, as suggested.
Most hotels around Union Square run a shuttle to the airport or can arrange one for you.
Taxi is expensive. Guesstimate is about $35-$50, depending on traffic.

7 day wkly rental is often same or lower than a 4 day rental, unless the 4 days is at a special wkd rate thurs afternoon to monday afternoon.
so consider a hotel with free parking such as the Columbus motor Inn...and keep the car for excursions to the Redwoods or Half Moon Bay etc

Thanks for all the info. We will be flying in on a Saturday but not get the car until Sunday due to getting in late. We are getting up the next morning and driving to Healdsburg and staying at the Healdsburg Hotel for 4 nights then back to San Francisco for 2 more nights. Haven't booked that yet. Will keep in mind the hotels with airport shuttles. Thanks again

Check and see if the Union Square car rental locations are even open on a Sunday.
If you must have the car early, then I'd suggest getting the car on Saturday night. But then you'll have to pay for one night's parking.
Otherwise, get on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) early Sunday morning to San Francisco Airport and get the car there.
