San Francisco Car Rental

My family is planning a week-long trip to San Francisco and Half Moon Bay, CA this summer. We are splitting the trip 4 days SF, four days HMB. We're staying near
Union Square at probably the JW Marriott or Stanford Court. We were thinking about renting a car. Would it be better to begin the rental when we leave San Francisco to go to HMB or right when we arrive at SFO?

You won't need/want a car in SF (unless you plan day trip to Marin county or the Napa/Sonoma wine areas).

Parking in SF will cost more than the daily rental rates . . . .

As long as you're not planning on going out of the city, you will not need a car in San Francisco. Not to mention that overnight parking is very expensive. If I have something to do outside of the city, I have found it a lot more economical to just rent a car for the day.

You can take BART from the airport directly to Union Square. From Union Square, much of the city is in walking distance. Taxis are readily available and economic. The cable car is also an option.

I agree you should rent a car when you head to HMB. Most of the car rental companies have locations in the Union Square hotels.

We just got back from SF for a 3 day trip. We arrived on Friday and left on Monday. We had a day trip planned to take in Carmel and Monterrey for Saturday. I reserved an car from Alamo (on Bush St. near Union Square) in advance. It was a very easy process. We stayed at the Sir Francis Drake, which was only 1 1/2 blacks away from the rental location. Just rent for the time you need. Their hours were 7am-7pm, Monday through Friday. Have fun.

We think we will not rent until we go to HMB. We'll probably rent from a Union Square rental agency so we don't hit any hassles.

In my experience Dollar rental car always has the best rates, either at SFO or in-city location. I think there is one right by the JW Marriott in the parking garage across the street.
