Car Rental

For my trip to Arizona is it good to rent a standard car or should I get an SUV?

Just guessing, but I assume you mean for a business trip to Phoenix. A standard car should be fine.

No, actually I am planning a trip for June for our second anniversary. Fly into Phoenix, go to Sedona for a few nights, then two nights at the Grand Canyon, then ending in Scottsdale before we return home to NY. Is a standard car still good?

Do you plan to buy a LOT of stuff, sleep in your car, or plan to go on really bad roads in bad weather?

If not a standard car will be just fine. You'll get better gas mileage, can fit into tighter parking spaces, and your suitcases will be locked up and out of sight in the trunk.

Thanks! I was hoping for that answer, but wasn't sure what the roads were like on the way to the canyon.

The roads are great. Dont forget to visit Montezuma castle on your way to Sedona. We usually rent an Intermediate 4 door sedan but we're on the road for nearly a month each time. Greetings from Belgium Paul

Unless you plan to climb down into the canyon two days and two nights are to much.

Roads in area are great - driving thru desert my son commented that one could fall asleep at the whell, wake up 5 minutes later and still be on the road (they are that straight and flat).

I think 2 days at GC are fine, even without serious hiking. We spent most of a day riding shuttle bus to various lookouts - would stop, take some pictures, wander along a path. Even in summer was not crowded.

Next day husband and son did walk down Bright Angel Trail a few miles into Canyon - more walking than hiking - started early enough in day so heat was not an issue, returned for lunch, then took shuttle bus in other direction to observatory, ranger station, etc.

Since check-in at hotels is after noon, you probably are talking about
1 1/2 days with travel and that seems fine to me. Be sure to drag yourself up in one AM to see sunrise and walk a little ways along rim to less crowded area to see sunset.
