Canyon de Chelly

Hi all! We are going to Arizona soon to visit family. We fly into Phoenix, then plan on spending a few days in Tucson. We then head to Flagstaff, son has to work for a few days and we are on our own. I would like to go to Canyon de Chelly from Flagstaff and stay there a couple nights (camping at spider rock campground). We've been to GC, Sedona, Page, Petrified Forest, MV, Horseshoe Bend and even Canyon de Chelly. Our family thinks we are nuts for wanting to drive to Canyon de Chelly from Flagstaff, but it doesn't seem that far to me. (3 hours?) What might be a better option?

Sunset Crater, Waputki, and Walnut Canyon National Monuments are close to Flagstaff and have nice trails.

I would happily go to CdC from Flagstaff, and the sites Shanti mentioned are good too. You might also want to do a quick visit to Hubble Trading Post and perhaps Window Rock.

If you are into Native American art, google Rock Art Ranch and see if Brantley Baird is still doing tours to the sites on his property, it is very interesting. you call for appointments and directions. His Barn/Museum has fantastic artifacts too.

Thanks much. We will have a couple days in Flagstaff as well. emalloy, I was also looking for someone to agree with me, so thanks. We've been to one or two of the places that Shanti mentioned, and we should have time to go where we have not gone. I need our son to tell us! We have visited a few times. Thanks again.

If you go I-40 to 191 to CdC you go right by Hubble Trading Post Historic site.

Canyon de Chelly is a wonderful place best seen in the company of a Navajo guide. I believe there is only one public trail. Book a guide at the Holiday Inn gift shop.

At Hubble Trading Post there is a fascinating historic house. Free tours are available.

I highly recommend Canyon de Chelly.

I also found the Hopi mesas, especially Walpi, fascinating and memorable.

We did a guided tour in a 4wd. Enjoyable. There are also guided hikes from the campground and I regret not doing one of those the last time we were there. From the camp there is a self guided walk to a viewpoint (about 3 miles). I loved that, and we were alone.

We did visit the Hubble Trading Post, and we enjoyed that. We could stop again.

I need to look into what Shanti recommended and see if I can remember where we've been! And the Hopi mesa's.

Thanks for the advice.
