Camping on Big Island
DH and I are starting to sketch out our hopes and dreams for a trip to Hawaii this Thanksgiving.
OUr hope is to snag great airfare and do two islands- 4 days on Maui in a hotel (low-to-mid range cost, or B&B) and 4 days Big Island camping at two places, if possible.
I've heard that the BI with it's astounding natural beauty makes for great camping. Any rec's for parks or grounds that you enjoyed?

It's been many years, but there used to be a camping spot near Hapuna Beach (actually there were screened cabins...very basic) and on the Hilo side you could camp at Waipio Valley-along beach area (no sure if still permitted?). I'd think there would also be some option around Volcano National Park. there used to be cabins on Mauna Loa (you had to hike up to use)...but again not sure they're still in operation. Enjoy!

oooh! thank you! i like the idea of little cabins.
the only little camping cabins i've ever been in, in the pacific northwest and in wisconsin, always smelled like mildew i wonder if in hawaii, it'd be different b/c of the salty sea air?
thanks for your input!!
