There are 2 Gettys. One is the Getty Center in West LA, specifically Brentwood. You can get a lot of input for an itinerary here.

The other Getty is the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades. Similar info here to help you figure out what to do.

And I probably should have put this first, the Getty Web Page.

If you are going to the Getty Villa, note that you must have a free, timed entry ticket before you arrive. You have to show your ticket(s) before they allow you onto the premises to park your car.

While I loved the art at the Norton Simon, I can't get over the yelling at I received from an overly enthusiastic guard. We were standing about 15 feet back from a large painting quietly discussing it. With a rolled up museum map in hand, I vaguely used it to point towards a part of the painting I was talking with my partner about. A guard came running up and -- I kid you not -- literally screamed "do not point at the art". Remember, I was standing about 15 feet away from the painting.
But I digress. I agree that both the Getty museums are more about the facility than they are the art. Still, both are well worth a visit.
