xxx has no idea... Feinstein's, Cafe Carlyle are excellent choices if you can stomach the tariff and stiff "procedures". Better bet is the Algonquin, no matter who's appearing. A wonderful experience. Do check out websites for "Don't Tell Mama", "Judy's Chelsea", or you could do a websearch for cabarets in NYC which will result in lots of possibilities. "Nice ambience and good music" is all over the place, if you are intent on discovering for yourself where to go. Highly recommend the bar at "Rainbow Grille". Drinks are beyond pricey, but the atmosphere, views, ambience, are unsurpassed, and the piano player is magnificent.

When I was going to NYC this past summer I did a GOOGLE search and find THE website for cabaret news and reviews: http://www.svhamstra.com
Not only does he review cabaret all over NYC, he includes other cities such as SF, LA, Chicago etc. Check it out--it's great!
