Cabaret
I have posted before & the answers I have received have been very useful in planning my vacation to NYC. Yet I have a couple more questions. We have decided to see Cabaret during our stay, May 20-25. Should we wait to purchase tickets from the TKTS both or should we purchase them now? We would like to have decent seats. Also we are just taking a cab to our hotel, Milford Plaza, from LGA. Is there a flat fee or is this going to cost an arm & a leg?
And finally we certainly plan on visiting the Metro Mus of Art, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building & Central Park. Are there any other "must see" places that your typical tourist would enjoy? Any help would be appreciated.

OH, I hate to stir up a "can of worms", but is there a reason you are staying at the Milford Plaza? A quick search here or nearly anywhere else will reveal the longest list of "horror" stories about that hotel, generally proclaiming it to be the worst of the worst, with lots of far better places available for the same money. I suppose it may be too late to change as I understand that is one hotel that tends to never allow any cancellations -- probably the one way they can still keep people there after the first night.
Sorry, I'm not sure how ticket availability is these days for Cabaret, but the table seats down front or in the first "raised" row are really the best in my opinion. Perhaps if you want those it would be necessary to book in advance. Anyone know for sure?

The Milford Plaza has some good deals on rooms, and as long as you aren't expecting the luxury found at the Plaza, you'll be fine. I think the location of this hotel is great. I've stayed there twice without any horror stories. In fact, the concierge was even able to get us a last minute pre-theatre reservation at Sardi's on a Saturday night (not saying that Sardi's is anything spectacular, but it does seem to be popular).
Cabaret is awesome! One of my favorite shows. I agree with the previous poster. You want to sit at one of the small, 4-person cabaret tables in the front (or the banquette row) to get the full experience, so you may have to book ahead. You could also try www.playbill.com (set up a free account). They usually offer advance sales at up to 50% for Cabaret, but you may need to go on a weekday/weeknight to take advantage of the offer. Enjoy!

Hi lisas,
The cab-There is no flat rate from LGA. It's the meter+tolls ($3.50) + tip. Depending upon traffic, the meter should be $25-$35 I would guess.
The theater-Cabaret has been playing for a while so if you're flexible with which day you go, I don't see a problem getting discounted tickets at the TKTS booth once you arrive. The downside to this is you have to stand on line & they only accept cash or traveler's checks at the TKTS booth.
There are discount websites where you join for free & can purchase discounted tickets on line with a credit card. They might not be quite as cheap as at the TKTS booth but you know you're set & won't waste time. Playbill.com is offering discounts on Cabaret now through May 22. I have copied the info for you here
this offer is valid for performances through May 22 and all tickets regularly priced from $50 - $95 subject to availability are reduced to $30-$54.
There are three ways to purchase tickets: 1. Go to http://www.broadwayoffers.com and use code CAPBM23
2. Call Tele-charge.com at (212) 947-8844 and mention code CAPBM23
3. Bring a printout of this offer to the Studio 54 Box Office, 254 West 54th St (between Broadway & 8th Avenue, Manhattan)
This offer is valid on select locations, subject to availability through May 22
It is not valid for Saturday evening performances. All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. 8 ticket limit per order. Phone and Internet fees may apply. All tickets are subject to a $1.25 theatre facility fee added to the established price
If you want to go AFTER May 22, you'll have to wait for new offers to be posted, probably at the beginning of May at playbill.com. If are willing to go between the 20-22, you could just purchase them online or by phone with the info I've given you here. Don't try to print this message & go to the box office. You could join yourself and do that though.
Cabaret plays at Studio 54 which is a night club. The closest seats are chairs around tables. Further away there are regular seats from what I recall. I personally would have preferred the regular seats for comfort but others might disagree.
As to other "must see" sights, some sort of boat trip, whether the Staten Island Ferry for free (to see the Statue of Liberty) or a half circle Circle Line Boat cruise would be wonderful in May. My favorite museum is the Frick at 70th st just off 5th ave. It's a beautiful mansion with great art & decor and relatively small to absorb.
Most tourists like to explore the downtown areas of Greenwich Village, Soho, Chinatown & Little Italy.
Spend an afternoon on the upper west side. Go to lunch somewhere along Colombus ave. in the 70s-& then visit the newly renovated Planetarium at 81st.
BTW, if you do a text search here for NY sightseeing, there's lots more info. Have a great trip.

We walked past the TKTS booth every day last week and the lines were very long. I can't imagine wasting time in line there when you can get nearly the same discounts (and pick from more shows) online. We got 2-for-1 tickets to Cabaret ahead of time a few months ago (throught either Playbill, Theatermania, or Broadwaybox, can't remember which) for a table on the first raised row. (The show is fantastic!)
Try Hotwire or Priceline. You can do much better that the Milford Plaza.
