You might consider "High Fidelity" which is in prebroadway production in Boston. Since there is no buzz out yet, tickets should be available. Based on book and movie....time will tell, but it has a bit of a Rent sell to it.

One of the catchier songs in Rent is embarassing to have your kids sing, particularly with gusto. Rent the movie and see if you can pinpoint what I'm writing about.

>>>> "I am offended by yet another quality of life lecture - "Do you think using pot/drug use is just an acceptable rite of passage or do you feel that personal responsibility calls for another role model and optimal behavior?"

For over 100 years, theatre goers have enjoyed the story/ opera/ musical in one form or another. It's fine that you find it too dark - but to use it as a soapbox on life in 2006 (when Larson's version IS showing its age quite a bit - my only complaint with the show) is a bit over the top for me.

Well, said starrs, well said !!!

I wonder if there's a way they can combine this thread with the one about the nude sculpture and the sacked teacher in Texas?
Protecting children from "nudity" -- protecting them from stories of drugs, sex, or AIDs -- kind of all in the same ball game.

While Thanksgiving week might be sold out at the box office, you can still get tickets for Wicked here:

http://www.applause-tickets.com/newyork/wicked.asp

I used Applause for UK tickets (from Canada) and was very pleased.

Might be easier than worrying about Rent.

If you're willing to pay the price at Applause or other sites, then, yes, you can get tickets for Wicked...but, as the website says, prices start at $129....and those sure ain't sixth row orchestra center!

Hi everyone!! I really didn't expect such a great response. Well, you have all helped me decide. I don't think either Rent or chorus line is for my kids. My kids tend not to like serious, dark themes and enjoy lighter musicals. Thanks for the tip rearding Wicked tickets, I will look into single tix and if anyone has any ideas how to get premium seats that don't cost $200 to $300 a seat, please let me know. I think I will look into tickets to Stomp and Slava Snow Show for this trip ( my daughter already saw Blue Man group at camp and loved it) I was asked why we didn't like Spelling Bee. Well, I think we couldn't relate to it really( we live in Mexico city and that might make a difference) and honestly I think my kids might have been a little embarrassed by it.

Thanks to you all for everything. As my daughter says, this site is awesome!!

If your kids were embarrassed by Spelling Bee, I think they might be equally embarrassed by either Rent or by Chorus Line. I suspect they weren't so embarrassed by the show -- but rather embarrassed seeing it with Mom. Big difference. Teenage boys might normally roar at the whole scene about the erection -- but if Mom were sitting next to them, they'd rather die!

I also recommend Spamalot. It's got enough action to keep kids entertained, but it's really funny as well. The Wedding Singer might also be a good choice. Also, they've both been around for a little bit at this point, and I think it's not TOO bad to get tickets.

Your kids will like Slava's Snow Show. It was the craziest theater experience I've had in NYC! The theater is chock full of kids.

My 12 and 16 yr old daughters are begging me to see Rent. They have the movie, though I totally cringed when I heard "La Vie Boheme" and trust me, within a week they knew every word. Of course, my girls have been exposed to lots of art in many forms, and I am a musician so they've dealt with those issues (mom...did you ever smoke POT?) etc. but only a parent can make the best call for their children.

nancyjacky, CONGRATULATIONS! Your kids will be absolutely thrilled with Wicked. Be sure to buy and listen to the CD before you go. I had the songs memorized before I saw the show

For those who don't find "Rent" too dark and are interested in the original, check out the special on La boheme. One night only - October 6th - all seats in the house are $25.

It's their "Opera for All" special - www.nycopera.com. I'd be there if I could!

nancyjacky~
So glad you found tickets for Wicked after all! Glad to help.
There was an interesting article in the Toronto paper today about why Wicked is such a moving play to see.... for all ages, but especially pre-teens.

If anyone is interested, here it is:

Just don't find out too much about it before you see it! Too me, an appeal of the show was seeing how they carried out the story. At first, I wasn't that crazy about the show, but as it went on, I really ended up enjoying it. We saw it this summer, and my daughter, 14, still plays the CD every day, over and over again!

Yes, I agree. Don't overthink it or research it either. Just go and enjoy.

Have they seen the movie (Rent)?

Perhaps work in the La Boheme angle, give it historical context, and make it an educational experience.
