Breakfast choices near Sofitel - NYC

We are visiting NY in early March and staying at the Sofitel. We have some good restaurants lined up for dinner (db bistro Moderne, Roberto Passon, Modern Bar Room), and want to keep it simple and pretty cheap for breakfast. Are there any good authentic bagel places or diners in the area around the Sofitel? Breakfast there is around $38/pp, and we just don't want to spend anywhere near that. Having said that, I don't really want an Egg McMuffin either!

Thanks!

You would get more responses if you told us where the Sofitel is located.

if it is the one on 44th, you can do the Flame diner for basic diner food OR for nicer stuff try out DB Bistro - i think they do breakfast now.

The Red Flame Coffee shop on the same block is the "go to" b/f place in that area. There are something like 5 hotels on the block though and it can get crowded. The Cranberry Deli gets very good reviews on menupages. Not sure if it's just take out though. http://www.menupages.com/restaurantd...taurantid=3715

For a really nice breakfast, we enjoy Gaby's in the Sofitel. There's a menu and you don't have to spend $38/person. Also nice is the Round Table Room at the Algonquin in the same block.

Red Flame is just fine. It's a typical New York coffee shop. But, it's very crowded and loud and rushed. And, they overcook the scrambled eggs and there are no re-dos.

For an outstanding breakfast at very reasonable prices, head to Metro Marche in the Port Authority Terminal. Nice atmosphere, excellent food, friendly and efficient service. You can check their menu online. There's also a terrific take-away section with pastries, salads, sandwiches, beverages. Great for collecting a picnic or whatever for later.

There are delis all around where you can get coffee and an "egg on a roll" for a good, fast and cheap breakfast. I can't remember exact names or street at the moment, but I remember coming out of the Sofitel, turning left [east] and walking to the first major N-S street. There was a good place if you turned right [south]; it was on the right side of street.
