Boston Night Life for 40+ female
A female friend of mine is traveling to Boston in late May.
She is in her late forties and is interested in going out to fun spots for 'mature' adults.
She is single, but doesn't enjoy the 'meat market' scene.
She enjoys jazz music and loves to dance.
Any suggestions?

Thanks yk.
I did some searching for her for jazz and checked out Scullers Jazz Club and the Regattabar.
And then a few restaurants that have jazz lounges..Top of the Hub and The Bristol Lounge.
She would probably like those, but she may want to dance a bit more.
Do you know of any dance clubs that cater to an older single, non-college crowd?

Gosh Concorde,
I don't know places like that anywhere; wishful thinking I'm afraid. I remember being in New Orleans with a girlfriend in our mid thirties and chatting with a local couple at the next table and we asked this very question. We both loved to dance and asked where people our age hang out. They said "at home with their kids". Unfortunately dance and singles venues are mostly geared to 20s and maybe 30s. I keep wondering if this is an opportunity for someone to fill this void; if you build it, will they come?
That being said, I think the Regattabar may be the closest to fill that description. I used to dance at the Top of the Hub in my late twenties and it was really fun 20 years ago. If she finds any great spots, please report back!

Thanks ncounty..and yes, you are probably right. But for those of us who don't have kids or a husband and still don't want to get off the stage yet!!..it seems like a crime that there are no such venues around!!
Anyway, I'll give her the information and let her make up her mind what she wants to do.
Thanks for your responses.

maybe Ryles in Cambridge? it tends to have kind of a Latin beat, and I know they have "Salsa" night. It seems a bit older than the college crowd. But I'm really not sure if that would fit the bill or not. When we've gone there for jazz there hasn't been dancing. I don't what kind of crowd goes there to dance.
generally there don't seem to be many clubs catering to the over 35 and still dancing crowd around here. My friends who fall into that category tend to go to singles dances (for older singles), or swing dance events and that kind of thing. she could probably find those types of events listed in the Boston Phoenix, after she arrives.

The Beehive is great but always expect a crowd.
As mentioned Ryles is good, I go there a lot myself.
Check out Johny Ds in Somerville, mostly R & B and alternative music.
Plough and Stars-just outside of Harvard Square-Cambridge.

Hi all,
My friend had a look at the Beehive website and it looks like it may be a winner!
They have live music every night and she picked up a good vibe from them over the phone!
Thanks for all of your responses.
