Boston and then Maine

Hello
I know there is a wealth of info on the Internet but if anyone can give me some pointers to narrow my searches down I would be very grateful.
My 20 year old son wishes to fly from England to Boston for a 3/4 day stay. he then plans to go north to visit some friends in Falmouth, just north of Portland. He is a student on a tightish budget and is therefore looking for a centrally located, low priced Hotel in Boston. Any suggestions? Secondly what is the best way to get from Boston to Falmouth/Portland. Is there a rail link? Or good coach links? I understand it is an approximately 2 hour journey.
Any help very gratefully recieved.

There is a train from Boston area to Portland - you can find out schedules/fares on MBTA.com.

Dear Morgana,
If you type in "hostel boston" in the search field, there are some good tips there if you read some of the threads. A hostel would be my thought for a college-aged person on a budget. Also will depend on what time of year. We're having the Democratic National Convention here from July 26-29 and there won't be a room to be had. Also consider May will have many graduations happening.

Morgana-

The train from Boston (North Station) to Portland, Maine is served by Amtrak (not MBTA as gail has mentioned above). It takes 2hr45mins & $21 for a regular adult fare. Not sure if there is public transportation from Portland to Falmouth. Does your son's friends have a car and can pick him up from Portland?

Greyhound also has bus from Boston to Portland (operated by Vermont Bus). It takes about 2hrs and costs $29 (regular adult fare).

You can find more info at:
www.amtrak.com
www.greyhound.com

Morgana-

Hotels in Boston are expensive, so the possibility of a "centrally located, low price Hotel" is close to zero.
If your son doesn't mind staying in hostels, he can try Hostelling International in Boston, which is located at a reasonable central location.

Your other option would be try priceline, but make sure you go to biddingfortravel.com first before you bid on priceline.

Good luck!

Hope this is not a dumb question! Does Amtrak or any other service have a train/bus to NYC from the Boston area? We will be in Boston in Sept. and thought it would make a nice side trip. How long does it generally take to get there?

Amtrak runs from Boston to NYC. The Acela Express is the fastest and most expensive. Log on to www.amtrak.com for schedules and fares. A lot of times they (or AAA, I forget), offer buy one/get one 1/2 off. The regular train (not Acela) was about 4 hrs, I think. Definitely a great way to travel. There are busses from Boston as well, although I've never gone by bus. NYC is definitely worth the trip.
Good luck.

There are many ways to get from Boston to NYC.

Fly - probably not the best way

Train - Amtrak has either Acela Express ($92 1-way for Bus class, 3.5hrs) or regular Acela ($66 1-way, 4hr 15mins)
www.amtrak.com

Bus -
1. LimoLiner - "luxurious" coach service. $69 1-way, 4hr 10mins
www.limoliner.com
2. Greyhound/Peter Pan $25-30 1-way, 4.5hrs
www.greyhound.com
3. Chinatown Bus (Fung Wah et al) $10 1-way, about 4.5hrs
www.fungwahbus.com

For inexpensive lodging in central Boston, consider the Oasis Guest House. This is a modest b&b located in a nice, desirable area. We had some friends from the UK stay there and they were quite happy with it.

Well, since this thread was originally about Boston-Portland, ME; I'd add that the "Downeaster" train leaves Boston's North Station.

The Amtrak to/fro NYC leaves South Station. There's subway between the two.

Hello, yes, there are 2 easy ways to get from Boston to Portland if you don't have a car. Any of the bus lines (Concord Trailways or Greyhound) or hop on the brand new Amtrak extension from North Station called the Downeaster, it's website is http://www.thedowneaster.com/ This train has gotten rave reviews and has about 7 stops along the way. Tickets are relatively cheap. From the station in Portland, there is a Doubletree Hotel right next door, or you can take a short cab ride into town where you have the Eastland Park, Holiday Inn, The Regency or the new Hilton to stay at. All are great places. Good luck and have fun.
