My husband and I are looking to stay in Boston for 3 days and then going to Newport RI for 3 days. We would like to stay somewhere reasonably priced $100-150 a night in Boston close to some form of public transportation. We are also wondering how to get from Boston to Newport without renting a car any ideas?

Public transportation between those areas is not so great. Bonanza bus has a route to/from both areas.

You could also take the train to Providence RI (great walk around city)from Boston and then get limo. service or take the bus from there to Newport.

I'll let others in the know help you find a place under 150. in Boston. If your coming to Newport during the winter/early sprng you may be able to find something in that price range although it will be limited.

Try the Inn at Newport Harbor, Wellington, Black Duck Inn and other small B+B's in the historic section as they're in the center of town and within the walking areas.

The larger Hotels ie Hyatt, Marriot and others will be over your budget.

The Morrison House B&B is located in Davis Square which is right on the red line of the T (subway - the B&B is a 1 to 2 minute walk from the station) the prices are VERY reasonable and it really is a great location. I was there in May and loved it there so much I will be back in June. (If you click on my screen-name you will see a thread I wrote called "I love Boston" I gave a great review of the place.)

As far as getting to Newport, I am pretty sure I saw it somewhere (while researching for my trip) that you can take a ferry.

Try the Charlesmark on Boylston street in Copley Square in the back bay. It's right across from the "T" and 3 stops to Park, the major change stop if needed.

That's a tight budget for Boston. Look into the Wyndham on Broad St., often good deals to be had there.

As for getting to Newport without renting a car....I have no idea. I really don't think there's any public transporation...maybe a bus? It may be easiest just to rent a car. Parking in Newport can be tough but not sure what the alternative would be.

If you want to stay strictly in BOSTON, it is true that your budget might be a little tight. (When are you planning on going)

I looked up the Charlesmark that cigalechanta recommended because I had never heard of it and I like that location. I emailed them to see what a SINGLE would cost June 13-20 : Standard Room- $159.00 Plus 12.45% tax
Queen Room- $189.00 Plus 12.45% tax

The METRO Boston area has a lot of nice places for a lot less (with plenty of nice amenities. The T makes it very easy to get to wherever you need to go. (You can get a 1, 3, or 7 day visitor pass)

Also, I Googled it, and yes, their is a ferry to Newport like I thought. (but I think that is a better option when the weather is warmer.)

When are you going?

Try the Chandler hotel in Boston. You can book it via hotels.com ifthey say there's no room. We did that in 2004.A couple of blocks from the subway. We did everything on foot after having taken the shuttle the first day. Paul

You can take the Amtrak train from South Station in Boston to Kingston, Rhode Island. From the Kingston station ( much closer to Newport) there is a RIPTA bus that goes directly to Newport (ripta.com)from this station

Why use Amtrak + RIPTA when the Bonanza Bus will take you all the way from South Station to Newport, for less money?

Bidding on priceline for Boston either downtown or Copley will get you something for under $150. Copley is esecially convenient for the "T".

The only ferry that I know about runs from Prov. to Newport and will be not only difficult to get to from train or bus lines but hardly runs during the winter months, if at all.

I would however, for my own info. like to hear about the Boston to Newport ferry.

The RIPTA buslines are local and make many painfully long and indirect stops. Bonanza bus will take you straight from Boston to Newport or Prov. to Newport if you want to make the stop to check out Prov. or another mode of transport.

Are you planning this as a winter excursion?

p.s. as others said, there's no need for a car in Newport and parking is difficult if in midtown.

A quick look at a map will reveal why there is no ferry between Boston and Newport.

I apologize then - I was so sure I saw somewhere that it was a Boston/Newport ferry - So when I Googled it and saw Boston/Newport/ferry in several hits I just assumed ... Well, I get easily confused. But my heart was in the right place.

Depending on when in May you're going you shouldn't have too much trouble finding deals. Hyatt Downtown Boston is REGULARLY won on Priceline for $48.00 and is VERY convenient to the T/Downtown Crossing, and walking distance to practicaly everything on a nice day (not raining).

Check out Hotwire/Priceline for Newport lodging....the ONLY 4 star offered on Hotwire is the Hyatt on Goat Island, can often be had very reasonably. the 3 stars on Hotwire/Priceline will be either Mariott, Newport Harbor Hotel, or the Viking. Priceline has the Hyatt as a 3 star.

No ferry Boston to Newport, but there is a ferry Newport/Providence if you want to take a day trip up to Providence....but I wouldn't try to plan it into your commute from Boston...the Bus is the easiest/fastest way to go.

Maybe you should try Priceline for the Boston part of your trip. $100 to $150 sounds like you won't get anyplace very good unless you go through Priceline (and maybe not even then).

Wallace + - there actually does seem to be some kind of cruise type of boat that has been advertised during summer months from Boston to Newport so your really not that off base.

As with all smallish boats heading that way, I'm sure that it would go down the cape cod canal and probably be a stunning trip. One to definitely put on the must do list.

Somehow I missed the reply stating that Sherrio was planning on arriving in May - is this true as stated by milemarker? If indeed that's the case, finding something in Newport under 150. will be difficult as prices do seem to go up after April 1.
