Big Island with toddlers ages 2 and 4

We will be staying two nights at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort arriving on a Friday at noon and leaving on Sunday at 6 PM. We are planning on a one day trip to VNP on Saturday heading north passing Hilo. Anyone have any suggestions on an itinerary upon arrival on Friday afternoon and also on Sunday before our flight out of Kona at 6 PM? Is there anything worthwhile seeing that isn't too far from our hotel? How far is South point from Keauhou? We don't want to make too many stops on our trip to VNP as the drive will be very long so we were hoping to do some additional sightseeing on Friday or Sunday.

Thanks!

If you are coming from the mainland, you don't say, I would leave Fri afternoon for playing in the pool or on a beach for the toddlers. The will have endured a long flight and will need to burn off energy. Sat will be a long day for them too being strapped into car seats for many hours.

Right next to the hotel is a wonderful place to snorkel,or play on the beach,or flop around in shallow water: the kids ought to be quite happy there.

Have you been to VNP before? It is a really long drive from Keauhou and I don't know how enjoyable it might be for young children like yours...

We very much enjoyed the view of the tidepools from our lanai at the KBR.
Agree, the nearby Kahalu`u grey sand beach is a great snorkel spot as stated by TM76.
Would also suggest Place of Refuge as worthwhile sightseeing, about half hour south of Keauhou:http://www.nps.gov/puho/planyourvisit/virtual.htm
South Point is an hour's drive from Keauhou and personally if driving this far would go to Punalu`u black sand beach, if you haven't seen one.
