Taking a quick break from wine tasting and hiking in Sonoma County, we stopped at the largest domestic adobe building remaining in the United States. Vallejo’s Petaluma Adobe (in Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park) was built under the guidance of General Mariano G. Vallejo, commandant of the Sonoma pueblo, back before California became a state. It made for an interesting stop before purchasing way too much wine (again). Oh, watch out for those prickly pears!

Growing up in the southern part of CA, as both Tom and I did, our fourth grade history lessons were skewed to the south. Pretty sure the books were the same, the lessons maybe not so much. We focused on the missions in our region if I recall correctly. Moving to Sacramento has made me realize this. Maybe next year when my oldest grandson is in 4th grade I will check out his textbook. Currently I am taking an adult ed history class focused on the development of the small towns in the Delta. Fascinating to this LA raised girl.e

I must admit I was ignorant when it came to General Vallejo when I visited Sonoma five years ago. I do have an excuse...the fourth grade is when I learned to make Manhattans, Martinis and Mai Tais.
