I don't know where I heard that you get a different rate sometimes when calling the hotel instead of just going by their rates stated on their web page -is this really true?!!

Probably. Doesn't mean they're better though.

I used to sometimes call and ask about promotional or "manager's special" rates, but I stopped when I kept getting no for an answer.

While I'm not sure, I believe these days at most hotels the reservationists see the same rates in their systems as you see on the hotel's web site. That said, I'm pretty sure that I've come across a few hotels which have a completely different web site than the chain they are flagged with, and in those cases maybe there is a difference. But I think in general it's unusual for the hotel to give you a different rate over the phone.

I tried a couple of times, didn't work. Either hotel's website was cheaper, or sites like Quikbook, Expedia.

I think it was true some years ago when not so many people used the Internet.

Many places have a web or internet only rate the is cheaper and only available from the hotel website. Can't get it by calling.

Actually a few times I have gotten some special rate by calling the hotel schnookies BUT I called the direct phone no. of the hotel, not the general free toll reservation no. Anyway, why not call, you just lose a couple of minutes of your time.

I call the hotels directly and would say about 75% of the time I get a better rate than the website. Like LI, I call the hotel directly, not the central reservations number. Most of the times they will ask if we are coming for a special event and they offer a good rate. It has worked for me for the last 10 years or so. One place even matched the Expedia rate, yet we did not have to prepay or anything. Of course I always go into it without any expectations, but am usually pleasantly surprised.

It's true that if you will find lower rates on Expedia, etc. because that's the nature of the hotel's contracts. But many will easily match the rate and you could save a little. It never hurts to ask!

I had VERY good luck last year by calling the hotel directly. This year wasn't impressive but, I agree with LoveItaly, it's only a call and if it works, you win!

Also, with the large chains, it may depend if you call the main 800 number or the specific location. And it's always worth asking about any specials. They rarely volunteer that info. As far as the websites, I find it's best to register with their preferred customer program and always check specials and other discounts (AAA, AARP, etc). Those rates are usually the best.
