There is no need for a taxi number - you can't call them in NYC they are not set up for that system. Taxis are just hailed on the street or picked up at the line at airports and train stations.
Only car services can be called - unless you are using Uber (which seems to be losing some popularity due to jacking up rates at busy times.)
Taxis sit in a pool lot at each of the airports and come to the terminals when called by the dispatcher. At busy times there can be hundreds in the airport pools.
