Taxi or car service from JFK to Manhattan?
According to its website Carmel car service charges 35$ fron JFK to Manhattan. If there are no hidden extras this price equals the taxi fare (tolls and tip included). Any feedback on which option is better would be most welcome.

If you are using Carmel or any car service when arriving at JFK, watch out for hidden extras like waiting time if your flight is late. Another inconvenience when arriving: the driver can't park next to the terminal, so you might have a bit of a walk to where the car is parked--and YOU will be dragging your luggage, not the driver.
I think a taxi is fine on arrival, and the car service is better when returning to the airport. Going to the airport, you will be picked up at your location and the fee will be set--no set fee for cabs going to JFK.

Dennis -- I would be surprised if that fare *includes* tolls and tip. It usually does not include tolls. If they meet you inside the terminal with a sign, that's extra.
This makes the price pretty much exactly the same as taking a yellow cab (at least *from* JFK to the city where it's a flat rate -- it's on the meter going *to* JFK). Unless you're coming in at a peak time, like the end of a holiday weekend, I think it's preferable to just take a taxi. It usually isn't difficult to get one, you don't have to worry about where to meet them, you don't have to call when you arrive to confirm (causing a delay), you don't have to walk to their car parked in the hinterlands, etc. Of course, the car service cars sometimes are nicer.

I agree with ellenem. Take a taxi when arriving at JFK (now that cabs are required to have a/c) to avoid extra waiting charges. Take the car service back to JFK because the cab will be "on the meter" vs flat rate.
