I agree with november_moon that since SF weather is completely unpredictable (it's gorgeous today, and should be in the 80s, but by Saturday, it might only reach the mid-60s), you should plan when to come based on your other destinations. However, I would NOT say SF is "generally" a chilly, foggy sort of place. I would agree, though, it is "often" a chilly, foggy sort of place, and noone should ever plan to come here for the "great California weather". (I have worked in the city of San Francisco for 37 years, so I've been here pretty much 5 days a week for all of that time, and it is incredible to me how much less foggy it is now than 30 years ago).

I agree that the fog is part of the charm. Especially when taking a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge peering out from the fog! Just trying to determine if the weather differs all that much from what we experienced before for the months of the year we are thinking about. I will just have to pack to include layers again to be prepared for the variations. It is warmer more inland toward Yosemite anyway.

Thanks for asking. Yes, my DS got food poisoning on our European trip. Luckily he was feeling better for the plane ride home. He did spend two days in the hotel room pretty wretched. By the time we got home though he was fully recovered. Except for his experience we had a fabulous time for our first European adventure. Would love to go back one day to cover the sites we missed (Oxford, cotswolds, some additional sites in London too). I am taking notes on Texasbookworm's adventures meanwhile!

For next year DS expressed an interest in northern California (He did see LA and San Diego before) and DH wanted to explore national parks since we have never been to any. I started off with a too ambitious plan to cover too many states in one trip which I realize from responses to my other posts that that is not very feasible. You can do it but not really enjoy it--too much driving and not enough time seeing. So I am in the process of paring it down and determining what is best.

San Francisco is never a place you go for "nice" weather. It's a fantastic city and you just have to bring layers any time of year. Sometimes a chilly wind comes up and chills you to the bone. This February we spent many days walking the SF stairways and it was beautiful! But we peeled and added layers throughout the day and evenings.

I don't think there is a noticeable enough difference in the weather in SF during the months of June, July or August - all three months have a high potential for foggy or overcast skies until mid- to late morning, potentially clear and sunny, but coolish (mid-60s) afternoons and cool evenings with high potential of fog returning. If you really want to experience the waterfalls in Yosemite, however, definitely opt for June - they're pretty much dried up or trickling by late summer. And make reservation for Yosemite ASAP - they fill up very fast.
