Summerstage -- for free or cheap events in Central Park
http://www.summerstage.org/

Shakespeare in the Park -- tix at the Public theatre

Philharmonic/City Opera in the Park -- you'll need to look up dates

Midsummer Night's Swing -- great swing and other types of bands at Lincoln Center. You don't have to buy tix and dance on the dance floor, you can hang out near the fountain and hear the same music for free.

museums -- most are "pay what you wish." MOMA, Guggenheim, Whitney have free Friday afternoons.

You got so many great ideas. I agree with others about gifts. The important people back home won't expect any gifts. Write trip report, include your own photos, and give it to them.
I always loved Metropolitan after a long walk in Central Park

Being a student myself, I have spent many trips out to NY visiting friends/boyfriend and trying to do it on a budget. How long are you going to be there? Have you been to the city before? Where are you going to be based?

If you plan on doing alot of bouncing around different parts of the city that aren't all in walking distance I recommend getting an unlimited metrocard to ride the subway/buses. 1 day is $7 and a week is $24. If not on an unlimited it's $2 a ride. Thinking there and back it's easy to ride more than 3 times in one day, or 12 in a week.

I really enjoy the burgers at Big Nick's (71st and Columbus) My favorite is the Hawaiian Buger ($5.25; deluxe extra $2.25). Although this may be more than a typical McDonald's meal - the burgers are awesome and I couldn't eat anything besides it. They have every kind of burger you could ever think of as well as other types of food.

If you are near Times Square in the morning - Times Square Hot Bagels (44th btwn. Broadway and 7th) is a place I enjoy picking up breakfast for a decent price.

I personally thought the Guggenheim was overrated. The American Museum of Natural History ($10) was a place I spent all day and could easily spend many more. The Met ($7/suggested donation) is also a good one to go to.

Walk around Central Park (as many have said) there is so much to see there. The Belvedere Castle, the Angel of the Waters fountain, The Lennon Memorial ...stop at the Dairy (Vistors Center) and get a map...plan out your route and have fun!

Check out http://www.menupages.com for food ideas. All the different restaurants are rated by vistors and you can search based on many different criteria. I've never been disappointed with their help.

Also if you're interested in seeing a broadway show - try to get tickets from Rush. Check out http://www.talkinbroadway.com/boards/ to see rush policies. If you get tickets they will be usually somewhere between $20-$25 instead of much more.

Enjoy your trip!
