If you want to get absolutely no color, I highly recommend Solar Defense SPF 35. I am extremely fair skinned and I wore it during a three day trip in the Grand Canyon. I played in the water. I only applied once. It did not come off . I got no color at all. I have been a real believer since then. I get it through my dermotologist's office (no it is not a prescription). The bottle has an 800 # on it. You could call that: (800) 530-3722.

I have to use sunscreen and don't much like it (texture, smell...)

I think I've tried them all. Favorites:
Laura Mercier "tinted moisturizer" is a fantastic all-in-one. Shade I use looks nearly invisible, moisturizes fine, and is SPF 20. Not cheap ($38), but worth every penny for performance and convenience. When I don't care about "makeup", I like Olay Total Effects with Suncreen (unscented version).

I use Avon Anew All in One lotion w/SPF 15 daily. It comes in either a cream if you prefer heavier or a lotion for lighter. You can wear it under make up or on its own.

I like Neutrogena and Aveeno, SPF 30. I have a fair to medium complexion.

I just saw this thread, and Kal I didn't watch 20/20 last night.

I did read recently there was some kind of a class action suit against various manufactures that "claimed" their sunscreen protected us when in fact the don't..but don't remember the details.

I have been using Neutrogena Ultra Sheer DRy-Touch SunBlock, SPF 30 with Parsol 1789. And article (SF Chronical I think) said any sunblock with Parsonl 1789 was very good.

I started using this product as my DIL's dematologist advised her to buy it. She consequently bought it for me. And thanks to Jorr's comments on his FFR&R's I purchased it for my neighbor. When I recently replaced mine I did notice there are Neutrogena sunscreens on the shelves that do NOT have the Parsol 1789..so one has to read the labels.

Regarding skin problems caused by sunscreens, I and many people I know seem to have a problem when PABA is one of the ingredients. The Neutrogena does not have PABA in it.

Wishing everyone a "safe" summer!!

Interesting article: http://tinyurl.com/qzjnr. When I see people of all ages (especially young kids) baking themselves in our South Florida sun..I cringe..they'll look like well aged leather when they get older.

L'Italy...I knew I had a lot of beer last night but I knew I wasn't dreaming...
From the ABC 20/20 website:

Dr. Rachel Herschenfeld, a dermatologist in Wellesley, Mass., says you've got to read the fine print.

"There are certain ingredients that actually provide effective protection against UVA. The three most common include zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and something called Avobenzone, or parsol 1789," Herschenfeld said.

She recommends using products with the first two ingredients, especially for children.

But be careful if you're relying on Avobenzone. It degrades quickly in the sun, so keep putting it on, or look for a stabilizer like Helioplex, available now in just two products approved for sale in the United States: Neutrogena with Helioplex and Aveeno Continuous Protection Sunscreen. Outside the United States, look for products with the ingredient Mexoryl.

Hi there Kal, well I guess the Neutrogena I have been using is NOT the best, sigh. I am going to email this thread to myself..so another shopping trip to replace the new tube I just purchased. Thank you sincerely..you and jorr have been a wealth of information regarding protecting one's skin. Now if I can just convince my daughter.

Here in hawaii the sun is really strong, so the amount of sunscreen we put on has to be even more potent than everyone else's! But I have skin that is really prone to breakouts.....

I consulted with my dermatologist (try www.kennerdermatology.com--she splits her time between Hawaii and San Francisco) and I got a very informative lecture on sunscreens. She has me using "Solar Protection" (is that the brand? manufactured for FCL) with SPF 58 for when I go running. However, I'm really more into the Colorescience powders/makeup that she sells--SPF 30. These can be brushed on, and there's a translucent one that I use on my body. I often use this as an added layer over my makeup and/or sunscreen. (These powders are also great for brushing on guys with bald spots.) She also showed me a mousse sunscreen, which is popular with men because it's so light and airy, but I haven't tried that yet.

If you are participating in water sports, though, nothing sticks like Bullfrog.

I also really like the Oil of Olay with SPF 15; it's called Olay Complete all day moisturizer. I get the "sensitive skin" version because I'm not too fond of the classic Oil of Olay scent...

When I was in Aruba on vacation this year, I picked up Aruba Aloe Waterproof for Faces SPF 30, since I ran out of whatever I brought with me and the Aruba Aloe seemed a good "souvenir" option to bring home with me. To my surprise, I liked it a lot! Light and not greasy, and really worked. Even better, it has a light coconut scent - not medicinal like so many high SPF lotions. I think they sell it online at arubaaloe.com ...

Another vote for Neutrogena. They have a moisturizer with SPF 15 that I use under makeup. But if I'm going to the beach, I use their face sunblock lotion. Good stuff.

ggreen:

i believe SPF 15 Oil of Olay for sensative skin is the best if you want lightweight coverage. I think anything that is too oily will be uncomfortable and give zits and who wants that? I'm lucky to have found a $1 baby care sunscreen that does the same thing.

Another vote for the new Neutrogena with Helioplex.

I just tried that for the first time during a three-week Caribbean vacation on which I was out in the sun every day.

Goes on light wihtout stinging, and protected very well.
