Best subway route - Columbia Univ. to NYU

I have been studying the subway maps but haven't figured out which is the best route to take to go from Columbia University to NYU. Also, need to return from NYU to nearest station to 43rd Street between 2nd and 3rd.

Columbia - NYU: 1/9 train at 116th Street to Christopher Street. It's a short walk to NYU.

NYU - 43rd: 6 Train at Bleecker and Lafayette (1 block east of Broadway), transfer at 14th Street/Union Square for the 4 or 5 Express to Grand Central

Don't bother changing trains the 6 also stops at Grand Central which is at 42nd and Lexington Ave. When you get out head east on 42nd st to 3rd Ave, turn left and go north one block to 43rd St.

Have a great time while you are here.

An alternative that will take you closer to NYU than Christopher street and 7th avenue, would be to change from the 1/9 to the A train at 59th St(Columbus Circle). That would leave you at 6th avenue and somewhere between Waverly St and W.4th street depending on where you come up out of the subway. If you would like a nice short walk on a nice day, then just take the 1/9 to Christopher street.

I would also agree with just staying on the 6 train. Don't tranfer to the 4 or 5, esp if it is at rush hour. It is only a few extra stops and everyone going further uptown will be trying to switch there.

Can you stand one more opinion?

From Columbia, you may want to take 1 or 9 Downtown. Transfer at 42nd Street/Times Square to the N or R Downtown and get off at 8th Street/NYU.

Then you can also take that same N or R train from 8th Street Uptown to 14th Street/Union Square. There you can transfer to the 4,5 or 6 to 42nd Street/Grand Central.
