Tenthumbs- Initially I was leaning toward driving the coast and spending time along the way but now I think San Diego is the way to go if we do California. There is os much to do and if they really want to see the sights in LA I can do that easily but just enjoy the southern coast in a relaxing way. Thanks!!

It's tough to narrow it down.......but San Diego has a lot to offer. There are many threads about San Diego in the US/California forum. Check out some of those threads and start a new one if you have questions.

I don't live in San Diego, but I'm sure some of the San Diego residents can give you a definitive answer. The last several times I've been to San Diego has been either in the spring or the fall, and it's been at least in the 70's while I was there.

As to temps - just keep in mind that the farther you go from the coast, the warmer it could be - much warmer. That applies not just to SD, but you'll find it to be the case all along the coast. A few miles can make all the difference.

What do you mean not a beach vacation? Sunny and 70 PLUS at the beach is warm. If there is fog/marine layer in the morning - go to the Zoo, Safari Park, etc - and then come back to a beautiful beach day?

70 in NY is not beach weather. SOOO happy to hear it is on your coast, that will help with planning. Yes the zoo is definitely on our list of to do's! Surfing lessons for the kids, who knows maybe I will give it a go too
Still just looking at lodging, I need to do a night or 2 in LA while picking up my daughter, then head to San Diego. My daughter said Laguna would be a great place to stay as our base. So any help with lodging would be great. We like nicer places, oceanfront would be awesome too.
We will be there through the 4th, thinking of gong to Santa Barbara for the display, I understand driving will be crazy, should we head up there a night early and stay there?
Thanks!!

Yay!! Presented the trip ideas to the family and they are all in!! Now down to the nitty gritty of where to stay in each local..Nicer places please
So coming in prob 6/26 and will do a few nights in the Los Angeles area-(have to pick my daughter up there) can be on the water, does not have to be in the heart of LA bc we will have a car.
Then down to San Diego area for more beaching and surf lessons.
Then back up to either Redodndo beach or Santa Barbara for the 3rd of July so we are there for the 4th. Then we will have to head out on the 5th or 6th..
Any advice would be great!!

What is your budget for nicer places?
For LA - check out by the beach in Santa Monica, etc.
In San Diego - many choices - starting from as far north as Carlsbad to Del Mar to La Jolla to PB/MB - and over to Coronado - across the bridge from downtown SD.

Thank you Tomsd!- I was hoping to spend $250ish per room since I need two in each stop. The ones I found on other threads are more than that.
San Diego, I think La Jolla looks really nice for the kids.

La Jolla Cove Suites look good for San Diego area.
Le Meridien Delfina (formerly Sheraton) has the best rates in the Santa Monica area on those nights.
Traffic from San Diego to Santa Barbara will be a nightmare on July 3rd. You might want to consider your first 3 nights in San Diego, then move up to Los Angeles for the next 3 nights, then have an easier hike to Santa Barbara on the 3rd. Maybe leave at 9:30am right after the morning traffic madness, but before the noontime crush of people getting out of work early.

Great thinking clrkgriswold! We can easily grab her in LA nad head out south. Santa Barbara is not a must either. Just hearing that Redodndo and SB have the best 4th displays. But it really doesnt matter . I am sure they will enjoy where ever we are.
I will look at the Le Meridian, thank you
