So much great info!! Yikes! Now I am more confused! Thinking San Diego area would fill our bill without the coastal drive. Seems so much to do there too!!
Need to pin the fam down to help me decide!
Keep the ideas coming, and hotel options too..Please!

Yes, thats what I am thinking. I really the idea of the kids having a chance to try surfing and the warmer waters. I have been to LA and my oldest is a dancer so she is in LA alot, So maybe we just make San Diego our base and relax an do day trips from there...
If we do that any suggestions of where to stay, we need two rooms obviously and we like nice places. Any right on the water? Or a homeaway rental on the beach perhaps??

By July - the water in San Diego will be warming up to the higher 60's - which is fine for old polar bears like me - but the kids will probably be given wet suits by the surfing shops to use.
I love the drive down the coast - but teenagers would probably prefer hanging out at the beach here in San Diego.
For lodging - many choices - and there are some other threads in here with good tips. Suggest you start checking about staying around Pacific Beach/Mission beach - and you also can find condos/homes for rent.
Additionally - places on the bay side are usually less expensive and less crowded in the summer.
Look at a San Diego map of Pacific Beach/Mission Beach to get a better idea of what I mean.

No offense intended, but maybe you should research and decide on one location before asking questions about what to do and where to go. A lot of people have spent a lot of time giving you answers and you haven't even decided on a location.

I appreciate all the info. This thread is on California.
I am deciding on driving the coast or staying in one local. So that is the info everyone here is helping me on. I will have a daughter in LA at the time so California makes sense. I started a different thread bc I thought well what if I could do Hawaii as we get her from LA?
I thought it is ok to start 2 different threads and those with info on California will answer here and those with info on Hawaii will answer there. And then I can decide.

You've been given a lot of really good suggestions....just try not to get too greedy and overplan. I have a tendency to do just that.......
Poll the family, and see what they want. Here are a few considerations:
Flight time between the east coast and the west coast is around 6 hours, another 5 to Hawaii~that cuts significantly into play time and turns into more travel time. Hawaii deserves a trip of its own instead of a side trip from California.
If you want to pack in as much sight seeing as possible, the drive from San Franciso would be a good choice; if you want a more relaxing trip, stay in one central location and take a day trip or two. I'm a little partial to San Diego.
