There are many very good Chinese restaurants in cities east of downtown, but these three in Chinatown are also very good IMO:
ABC Seafood
205 Ord Street
Chinatown
Empress Pavilion
988 North Hill Street
Chinatown
Foo Chow
949 North Hill Street
Chinatown
Although Little Tokyo dining options are pretty good, the "best" Japanese food is found elsewhere in L.A. Here are the highest rated restaurants in Little Tokyo:
A Thousand Cranes
Kyoto Grand Hotel
120 South Los Angeles Street
Little Tokyo
Frying Fish
Japanese Village Plaza
Little Tokyo
Izayoi
132 South Central Avenue
Little Tokyo
Oomasa
Japanese Village Plaza
Little Tokyo
R-23
923 East Second Street
Little Tokyo
Sushi Gen
Honda Plaza
Little Tokyo
Not in Little Tokyo, but the latest, hip place for Japanese food downtown:
Katsuya
L.A. Live
800 West Olympic Boulevard
ABC Seafood
205 Ord Street
Chinatown
Empress Pavilion

Foo Chow

My most recent visit to Empress was disappointing. The only thing it has going for it is parking. In fact most of the Chinatown Restaurants have really gone downhill as the good ones have moved east. Try CBS for seafood or dimsum.
Sushi Gen is a reasonable choice in Little Tokyo.
Oomasa is inexpensive and okay, not great.
For a cafe with cheap lunch specials, Suehiro.
Thousand Cranes has a nice atmosphere.
And do pickup some mochis at

mlgb, that's too bad about the Empress. We haven't been there in at least a year but were just talking about going there before seeing "South Pacific" at the Ahmanson in a couple of weeks. I do think Chinatown has suffered a bit from the population shifts, but IMO it's much better now than in the late '60s and '70s. Little Tokyo has also seen better days. I so miss Tokyo Kaikan.

Jean, I was looking for a post where you had activity today from home or see if you are out of the country. I just got an email from you saying you were stranded in Wales and had lost all your money from a mugging. It is your email address that was used.
Is it a scam? They used your name, so led me to believe it's you. I didn't want to respond reply to that email. Let me know if you are OK.
