BEST PLAYS

Dear friends
Once again I would like your advice about good plays in New York. Last year I was able to buy tickets for The Producers while they were still easily available following the forum´s advice. We also saw Dinner with Fiends, Contact and Proof. We are planning to travell in may .
Thanks,
Marcia

Sorry to disagree, but I would avoid Noises Off. Very slapstick, with lots of doors slamming. OK if you like that sort of thing. What was really surprising was having a talent like Patti LuPone, and then not having her in a musical!

Put me on the side of recommending Noises Off. Yes, there are lots of doors slamming. That's one of the basic ingredients of a farce! Maybe it is silly, but it's very, very funny. And, Patti Lupone proves that she's talented even when not singing.
Other recommendations:
Arthur Miller's The Crucible starring Liam Neesom (Sp) and Laura Linney
A new production of Oklahoma

My all time favorite is Phantom of the Opera. It has everything. Great music, costumes, scenery, and romance.

Saw Noises Off this week. Very slap stick. Also saw Urinetown. Quirky but a high energy show.

Oklahoma! opens March 21st at the Gershwin, choreographed by Susan Stroman (Contact, The Producers).

I too recommend Noises Off. I think it was very funny.

PS: Judy, Patti LuPone has been in several non-musicals (Master Class, The Old Neighborhood, Accidental Death of an Anarchist)

Hi!
Thank you for the information.
I liked so much Contact that for sure will enjoy Susan´s coreography for Oklahoma. Should I buy tickets in advance?
The Crucible will also be on my plans. Are there any other non musicals?
Thanks, Marcia

Another vote for Noises Off, unless you do not like a true farce--to me it was one of the most sophisticatedly perfectly timed funny things I have ever seen--this was the original production and I'm told that this one is just as good.

Yes to Oklahoma too.

Definitely get tickets for Oklahoma in advance. I tried for a weekend in March and was completely out of luck.

I loved Noises Off, it is a slapstick farce done very well. But whoever called it sophisticated is way off the mark. There isn't one sophisticated thing about it. Sophisticated refers to something like a Noel Coward or Oscar Wilde comedy -- not Noises Off.

Just curious Elizabeth, which production did you see? I mean what year was it playing when you saw it? The current production is a new rivival.

FARCE: A light dramatic composition marked by broadly satirical comedy and improbable plot.
Noises Off is a perfect example of a farce.
