"Navajo Nation Visitor Guide
The Official Navajo Nation Visitor Guide is a comprehensive guide to the Navajo Nation. It includes information about Navajoland, Navajo beliefs, attractions throughout the area, and an extensive visitor directory. The visitor guide will help travelers navigate throughout the Navajo Nation with ease; providing visitors with the knowledge to experience the beauty and attractions the Navajo Nation offers."

It appears that the Navajo Tourism Department uses the word on their website, so perhaps it's not as offensive as some believe it to be.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Chinle , but on the way out of town. It was nice enough and had a restaurant on site.
We did not care for the location of the Bestwestern in the very center of town or the barbed wire surrounding it.

HappyTrvlr, where was the barbed wire?
There was none when we were there.
I was curious as to where it could be. I googled "hotel chinle barbed wire" and the search brought up the Holiday Inn. Here's one review of the Holiday Inn -
“Functional hotel”

We stayed here ahead of visiting Canyon de Chelle the next day. This hotel is adjacent to a juvenile detention center and our window overlooked a big hill topped by barbed wire; much trash on side of hill... Got the job done for a night's sleep, but i wonder if Best Western in town would have been better.
I can't find a mention of barbed wire at the Best Western.

We ate one night at the Holiday Inn to avoid the Sacred Lodge cafeteria. It was o.k., not great. I don't think there is great food in the area although I have heard that some of the guides to the canyons serve especially good lunches.

Are you planning to go to the Grand Canyon on this trip? If so, considering stopping at the Cameron Trading Post outside the park on the east side. We were surprised at how good their food was - especially their Navajo Fry Bread

Excuse the stream of consciousness here, but our soundtrack to that particular trip was Mary Youngblood's CD we bought at Cameron Trading Post -

Take a listen at that website. I think you'd appreciate her music.
Another idea - Chinle doesn't have a lot to offer because it's mostly a stop for visitors to CdeC. If I were to return, I would stay at Goulding's and drive to Chinle/CdeC. It would be a two hour drive, but what a gorgeous drive

This is a very interesting article about the area -

Jubi..try to book Adam Teller as your Navajo guide. He trains other guides, has his own company, Antelope HouseTours. Best part, he took us in a Suburban, not a bouncy truck which is common there.
We really loved Canyon de Chelly. Adam's family has a home in the canyon.. He is an award winning storyteller and told us one when we asked. Specail experience.
