If you could afford any hotel in midtown, upper west side NYC...where would you stay? I have a free night coming to me and want something reasonably close to subway, near restaurants and plan on doing theater and a night at the Met. Thanks!

This is a small place, not a big hotel, but so luxurious that you don't want to leave.

People definitely have their favorites. Mine is the St.regis. For your needs, the Mandarin oriental at columbus circle is amazing. That's a close second for me, but i love the old world style of the st.regis.

Mandarin Oriental would be my choice - but you really have to mean unlimited funds. A standard room is about $800 with tax and a Central Park view room is about $1100.

Yes, price is not a consideration. The Inn at New York City charges extra for a one night only stay, so I won't do that. The Regis looks lovely, I am in favor of something not a "chain"...May give that one at try.

The nicest hotels with good location for both the theater and opera would be near Central Park South/Columbus Circle-the Mandarin Oriental, the Ritz Carlton Central Park, Trump Int'l, the Pierre, the Plaza, St. Regis.

You might consider The Four Seasons - gorgeous modern hotel with spectacular views from the high floors - Central Park and NJ. Spectacular everything - views, service and PRICES! Comparable to Mandarin Oriental.

No question for me. The Mandarin Oriental, which sits atop a major subway station and is in the same building as 3 of New York's best restaurants. It's also about 15 minutes walking distance from Lincoln Center or Broadway.

I like the Four Seasons, but for what you are interested in, I don't think it's in the best location.

I'd probably pick the Peninsula or St. Regis or the Pierre for real New York feel. The Mandarin Oriental is lovely, but it's a chain and it's more modern in style, which isn't my favorite.

I would stay at the Sherry-Netherland or the St. Regis.

Somewhere that I always wanted to stay but I find to be too expensive is the Michelangelo. It looks like an elegant small hotel where a person would get personal attention.

The attention and service at the Mandarin Oriental are unsurpased. I've done several meetings there with extremely high level international clinical investigators and they were able to easily satisfy even the prima donnas.

However, it is VERY modern. If you want something traditional, this isn;t for you.

I would think that if you are paying $1100/night for a hotel, you don't care if it's on top of a subway station.

Wouldn't you just have your private limo take you door to door and wait for you?

You could have used a different excuse, but an extra $100 killed the deal? Their rates are around $700 so even if you had to pay $800 with the extra charge it's still cheaper than the $1100 being discussed around here.....

Again, I don't care if you pick the place, but it does seem strange that you dismissed a place because they have an extra 1 night only charge???

Besides, the Inn does state that they are willing to negotiate the 1 night extra charge, depending on the date of arrival.

The MO has a fleet of Range Rovers for its guests use. I'm sure the other top end hotels have similar.
