There is a hotel near Central Park called Washington Hotel. It is not bad and only around $30 a night. Try www.awesomedeals.globaltravel.com and do a hotel search for NYC.

$30 a night?!? Wow I'm skeptical as to the, ahem, quality of such an establishment. My advice is to be careful -- as a general rule you get what you pay for.

The Washington Hotel is a superior, budget class hotel/ hostel perfect for the student, youth and budget traveler.
Located in Harlem, off 125th street home to the Apollo Theatre and Magic Johnsons Magic Mall and Cineplex. The hotel is also located close to Central park and 6 miles from LaGuardia International Airport.

The Washington Hotel is a newly renovated 4 story building, with its trendy atmosphere and decor. The hotel offers 24 hour receptiona dn 24 hour concierge. We also offer internet kiosks, multi-lingual staff and we provide 3 lounge rooms to meet, eat and socialise with people from all across the globe.

At $30 a night, your definition of "trendy decor" and mine have to be vastly different.
I'm curious, when you travel, are most of you happy with staying in a hotel that "is not bad"? Or do you look for one that is good? There is a major difference in my opinion.

Yikes, just out of curiosity I looked up the Wahington hotel's web site. They call themelves a hostel with "semiprivate" rooms, and the only room photo that I found featured a twin-size bunk bed! Something for everyone, I guess.

And that's what they call "trendy atmosphere and decor"? There ought to be a law!

Try Priceline and Hotwire.

Leave the Washington alone; it appears to fit a need and represents an honest effort in the hotel industry.
I dare say that there are some of you who can afford the $300 or $400/night other hotels charge ONLY becasue you make your money in a dishonest and unethical way! (Note I am not indicting anyone in particular, just stating a well recognized fact of life).
So leave this place alone!
I suppose a bunk bed in a clean hostel is not what snobs look for!!

I look for safety and privacy. Sharing a room with a stranger gives me neither. If that makes me a degenerate bourgois, well so be it.

I have stayed here. They offer single, private rooms for $29 a night in NYC right next to the 125 St Station. You have to share a bath, but a private smaller room with tasteful, inexpensive furniture. I would recommend for anyone on a budget or young. There is even parking all over the place in the area for next to nothing, so if you drive in to NYC there is no worries.
