People are getting great deals on Priceline.com. Go to the website betterbidding.com for advice on how to do it. Other websites for discounted rates (without bidding)are hotels.com and quikbooks.com
People have gotten good rates at the Warwick recently (55th & 7th) $129-140

I just got back from a 5 night stay in NYC. I got a good rate on the bentley hotel on 62nd & York. It's all the way on the east side but a block away is dangerfields comedy club, restaurants, 24 hour deli, etc.. It's quiet, clean and nice and under $200. Great restaurant but perhaps its not what you are looking for. about 5 blocks away from central park and 4,5,6 subway.

I always stay at the Salisbury Hotel on 57th and Ave of Americas- 2 blks from Central Park and across the street from Planet Hollywood....
usually costs $189 and you can usually get a 2 room suite- all rooms have a mini kitchen-- DO NOT EXPECT the RITZ-- it is a NICe clean friendly hotel that has a tiny lobby and a small cafe ==PERFECT LOCATION--
Have been staying there for over 28 years-- it has undergone numerous renovations- but is still a mid=range type of hotel....

Check out the hotels operated by Manhattan East Suites online at www.mesuite.com
They were offering studio suites for $148 through April 27. We have stayed at two of their properties, the Dumont Plaza (four days) and the Southgate Tower (one night) and were quite pleased. The Dumont is in a great central Murray Hill location, walking distance to neighborhood restaurants and transportation (subway and bus). having a full kitchen was great - we picked up breakfast items and just ate in the room, had drinks and snacks there, too. The Southgate is across from Penn Station/ Madison Square Garden, a busier and more touristy neighborhood but was OK for one night. It also has kitchens.

I stayed recently at the Hotel Beacon on north Broadway about 75th street. Is that mid town enough?
It is about 10 blocks north from Lincoln Center. We walked it with no trouble.
The hotel has good rooms, with a little kitchen area. I liked the place.

You might try the Broadway Bed and Breakfast Inn on 46th near Broadway. It's a small European sytle hotel. Rooms are simple, clean and the location is terrific. Don't let the outside appearance deter you. Its located over a corner liquor store.
It's been about a year since we stayed there, but the staff was very accomodating, they serve a continental breakfast, and many of the guest seemed to be from europe and asia. I think a double went for around $175.

Midtown on the East side is quiet. Just the midtown area in the theater district/times sq. is noisy. Someon recommended a hotel way over on the East Side on York. That's a perfectly fine neighborhood but out of the way. It's a few long blocks to the nearest subway line and even further to most points of interest. Madison, Park, Lexington, even 3rd and 2nd avenue locations are decent.

"Quiet" in Midtown is surely possible. Our favorites are along 44th Street, just east of Times Square. Convenient to the Theater District, but a world (yet only a block or two) away. Here you have the Algonquin, Royalton, Sofitel, and lots of others. If you shop like the dickens, you can stay at any of them for less than $200/night.
That said, we just returned from a three-night stay at the Millenium Broadway for $97/night with Hotwire. Next month, we're staying at the Marriott for $125/night with Priceline.
We've also stayed (via Priceline, Hotwire, and the hotels' websites) at Le Parker Meridien, the Waldorf, the Hilton NY, etc.) and haven't paid more than $135/night.
Your best bet is to familiarize yourself with the hotels, then shop all available web resources and call around.

CJW,
After reading your post, intrigued, I visited the hotel's webpage.
Can you explain the layout of the suite? Does it actually have a separate bedroom? Fold out sofa bed? Suitable for a family?
All questions that the website does not answer.
